Throughout his high school career at Tulsa Union High School, he threw for over 5,000 yards and accounted for more than 60 touchdowns. His remarkable performance earned him the title of District Offensive Player of the Year following his senior season. Additionally, Thompson's achievements were recognized with an All-State selection.

He embarked on his collegiate football journey with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 2019 but did not see any game time for the next 3 seasons. He entered his name in the transfer portal, made the move to the University of Central Oklahoma and was a part of the Central Oklahoma Bronchos.

In the 2022 season, with the Central Oklahoma Bronchos, he had a season-high 30 rushing yards against Northeastern State, with his longest run being 21 yards against Lincoln (MO). His best passing performance was 66 yards in the season opener against Missouri Western, and his longest pass was a 47-yard completion against Northwest Missouri State. He threw one touchdown pass during the season and made one tackle on defense against Emporia State.

For his senior year in 2023, he decided to move back to Oklahoma State University. There, he did not see in-game play time but was a member of the scout team.
