10 national captains who failed to perform in the IPL

The beauty of a league like the IPL is the fact that we get to see so many national captains come together and play under one franchise. This has proved exciting at times, especially when we get to see players like MS Dhoni (former Indian captain), Faf du Plessis (South African captain) and Dwayne Bravo (former West Indian captain) all playing under one roof. The excitement is mutual for both the fans as well as the players.

That being said, a lot is expected from a captain wherever they play whether it is in the domestic leagues or for their country. Let’s be honest, it’s not easy to be the captain of your country. They are always expected to be at the top of their game at all times. The margin for error is very small as even a slight slip up could ruin your reputation among the fans.

While some national captains have lived up to the expectations of fans and team management (like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers), some have failed in the worst way possible that has cost their franchise dearly.

Here’s a look at 10 national captains who failed to get going in the IPL.

10. Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah-ul-Haq
Misbah-ul-Haq

Misbah-ul-Haq has to be considered as one of Pakistan’s most successful captains. He was prolific with the bat and contributed a lot to his team’s success throughout his career. Sadly, he failed to replicate that success in the IPL.

Misbah was part of the inaugural edition of the IPL when Pakistani players were allowed to be a part of the cash-rich league. He was purchased at the auction by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Playing for RCB, he managed to score a measly 117 runs in eight matches with an average of 16.71.

Given that Pakistani players were banned from the league, we never saw him participate in the IPL ever again.

9. Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya
Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya is widely regarded as one of the greatest opening batsmen to ever play for Sri Lanka. He has been a crucial part of the Sri Lankan dressing room for the better part of a decade. Hence, fans were expecting him to set the IPL stage on fire with his batting. He was purchased by the Mumbai Indians in 2008 and played for them for three seasons.

During the inaugural season, Jayasuriya was in great form. He scored one century and two half-centuries, accumulating a total of 494 runs in 14 games for his team. Despite his standout performances, MI failed to make the playoffs.

Unfortunately, his performances went downhill from there for the Sri Lankan batsman. When he returned to play for the same franchise in 2009, he was just a shadow of his former self. He played 12 matches in his second season and scored just 221 runs (less than half the runs he scores a year prior). Things didn’t get better for him when he returned for his third season.

This time he was only involved in four games and scored a measly 33 runs at an average of 8.25. His string of poor performances saw him released from his IPL contract the following year and this was the last time we saw him in the IPL.

8. Darren Sammy

Darren Sammy made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 and was appointed their captain. Under Sammy’s captaincy, SRH made the playoffs, but his performances were just ordinary. With the bat, Sammy scored a decent 174 runs in 10 games at an average of 29 and with the ball, he took eight wickets at an average of 21. He had done enough to warrant another contract with the franchise in 2014.

His performances took a huge hit as he managed to score just 108 runs in 10 matches and claimed just three wickets. His bad performance with bat and ball led to him being released from his contract the following year.

He then went on to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore for two seasons from 2015-2016. He only played two games for RCB in those two years. He scored 13 runs and went wicketless.

After being released from RCB, he went on to play for Kings XI Punjab in 2017. He never to got play a single game for the franchise and spent his time as a bench warmer.

7. Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews initially made his debut for the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009. He only played one match for them before being dropped from the side and released from his contract. He went on to play for Pune Warriors India for three seasons (2011-2013). This is also where he scored his first and only half-century in the tournament when he scored an unbeaten 65 against the Deccan Chargers.

He scored a total of 532 runs across three seasons for PWI at an average of 20.4. His bowling failed to impress as he claimed just 20 wickets with a best bowling figures 4/19.

Following his departure from PWI, he went on to play for Delhi Capitals for two more seasons. His form depreciated even further. He scored a total of just 176 runs across both seasons for the Delhi Capitals. It was clear that the former Sri Lankan captain wasn’t good enough to warrant another IPL contract.

6. Jason Holder

Jason Holder
Jason Holder

Jason Holder became youngest West Indian player to become captain when he took over the reigns of captaincy from Dwayne Bravo. But prior to his captaincy, he was part of the Chennai Super Kings dugout during the 2013 edition of the IPL.

He was able to generate decent pace and bounce, but his performances weren’t memorable. He played 6 matches and picked up just two wickets at an average of 84. It should come as no surprise that he was released from his contract the following year.

Following his stint with CSK, he went on to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad for two seasons. Considering the strength of SRH’s bowling, it’s understandable that Holder wasn’t a regular member of their squad. He played one match for them and picked up just one wicket.

He then went on to play for KKR in 2016, but a change in the dressing room didn’t help his form either and he managed to take just two wickets in four games. He was soon released from his contract and remained unsold in the auction.

5. George Bailey

George Bailey

The former Australian captain started his IPL career in 2009 when he played for the Chennai Super Kings. Though he only played three games and scored 45 runs, he was retained for another season. In his second season with the franchise, he scored just 18 runs from one game. This was his last match for CSK despite being retained for two more seasons.

A big breakthrough came in 2014 and 2015 when he played for Kings XI Punjab. He was set to take charge of KXIP and did well as a middle-order batsman scoring 257 runs in 17 matches. This is where he exhibited his leadership abilities that helped take KXIP to their first IPL finals.

He returned for another season with KXIP and though his team performed poorly, Bailey’s performance with the bat wasn’t too shabby. Bailey piled on 259 runs and scored two half-centuries in the process.

In 2016, he moved to Rising Pune Supergiants. Again, his form deteriorated and he struggled to score runs. He was averaging at just 21 which was well below-par. Bailey failed to perform consistently with the bat which ultimately affected his team’s performance.

4. Ross Taylor

Ross Taylor
Ross Taylor

For years, Ross Taylor has been considered a destructive batsman. Hence, it was only expected for him to continue the same level of dominance in the IPL. Well, that’s not exactly what happened.

Ross Taylor started his IPL career as a part of the Royal Challengers dugout. His season wasn’t very memorable, to say the least. He hammered just one fifty and scored only 149 runs.

The most notable point in his IPL career came in 2009 when he smashed 81 runs against KKR. This knock is what resonates with the fans till this very day.

The next couple of years were quiet for the former New Zealand skipper. He didn’t score his next fifty until 2012 when he played for Delhi Capitals. So far, he has accumulated 1017 runs in 55 matches with three half-centuries. Given his potential to dominate bowlers, it feels like his performances didn’t live up to fans’ expectations.

3. Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is arguably one of the most successful captains in the history of cricket. His feats with the bat are also commendable. However, the ‘Prince of Calcutta’ struggled to adjust to the T20 version of the game.

He was set to lead the KKR team in the inaugural edition of the IPL. While he managed to score a few runs, his strike-rate was too low (113.68) and this affected his team’s run-rate. He ended the season with 349 runs in 13 games. It wasn’t just his batting that came under scrutiny, but his captaincy was criticized as well.

Despite this, KKR retained him and decided to diversify leadership roles by appointing separate captains for batting, bowling and fielding. This was perhaps done so that Ganguly could focus more on his batting. It didn’t help as he had one of his worst seasons in the IPL scoring only 189 runs in 13 matches at a very poor average of 17.18.

He was still retained by KKR for one more season in 2010. This was his best season with the franchise. He scored 493 runs in 14 matches. It seemed as if ‘Dada’ was back to his old form.

However, his slow scoring rate proved to be a problem for KKR and they released him in 2011. After his release from KKR, he went on to play a couple of seasons for Pune Warriors India but still couldn’t captivate audiences with his performances. He left the IPL for good after the 2012 season.

2. Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke
Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all-time. However, the Australia batsman had a disastrous IPL career when he took to the field to play for the Pune Warriors India.

Clarke failed to live up to the fans’ expectation as he only managed to score a measly 98 runs in six matches before being dropped from the playing XI. His experience and talent proved futile as Pune Warriors India finished at the bottom of the points table.

This was his first and only season in the IPL. He later settled into an analyst role to lend his expertise before and after matches.

1. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting
Ricky Ponting

If there is a list of greatest captains of all-time, then Ricky Ponting would top that list with ease. Everyone is quite familiar with his abilities on the field. Ponting is one of the reasons why Kolkata Knight Riders were regarded as one of the favourites to win the inaugural edition of the IPL in the first place. In fact, they had both Ponting and Ganguly playing on the same team.

But this wasn’t the case as KKR had a horrible debut season with Punter barely contributing much to the team. He scored just 39 runs in four matches.

He stayed away from the IPL for a couple of years before finally returning to action in 2013 as part of the Mumbai Indians team. He was appointed as their captain. His poor form with the bat continued which resulted in him resigning as captain mid-season. This move proved to be the turning point for MI as they went on to win their first IPL title.

He finished his IPL career with 91 runs in 10 matches with a very poor average of 10.11. Ponting has now settled into a coaching role for the Delhi Capitals team.
