4 famous batsmen who were stranded in 90s

Misbah-Ul-Haq was unfortunate to never score a century in the shorter format of the game

Missing out on a century always hurts. An international hundred is an achievement every batsman really loves to have on their resume. It annoys the players if they lose out on a century in 90s after playing for so long.

Sometimes players get out in 90s and in some instances, players remain not out in 90s either because allotted 50 overs for the batting team get completed or the batsman at the other end gets out.

In this article, we take a look at the four most popular batsmen who were stranded in 90s.

#4 James Taylor

Pakistan v England - 1st One Day International
James Taylor played
a fighting innings
but could not register the win

James Taylor had a decent start to his career with fifties against quality teams like Sri Lanka and India but could not retain his place in the team after a string of poor performances. It has been more than three years since Taylor played his last ODI and with England's batting lineup looking completely stable, it is highly unlikely that he will receive a call.

In their first match of the ICC World Cup 2015, batting first, Australia exploded for 342-9 in 50 wickets, thanks to Aaron Finch's blistering 135 off 128 balls. This included 12 fours and three sixes. England bowlers were left scratching their heads as Warner clobbered the bowlers for runs all around the ground.

In return, Michell Marsh rattled England with a fifer and reduced them to 92-6. Taylor who came in at number six played a fighting knock scoring an unbeaten 98 off 90 balls with 11 fours and two sixes. However, England could not register the win and suffered an embarrassing defeat by 111 runs.

#3 Mohammad Kaif

Mohammad Kaif of India on his way to a century
Mohammad Kaif will be remembered forever for his heroics in Natwest Series 2002 finals

Mohammad Kaif is one of the greatest fielders of all-time for India. He revolutionized the Indian fielding and is an inspiration for all the young cricketers when it comes to fielding. He was lightning-quick and was a live-wire on the field.

In the finals of the Triangular series involving Zimbabwe in 2005, India were pitted against New Zealand team. Kaif was in a terrific form and scored a century and a half-century in the series, entering the final. In the final, Kaif came up big once again and scored an unbeaten 93 off 110 accompanied by eight fours. However, India only managed to make 276 before they got all out.

The Kiwis chased it down without any problem, on the back of a brilliant century from Nathan Astle. Kaif ended the series as the highest run-scorer for India with 277 runs in five innings at a brilliant average of 92.33.

#2 Mohammad Yousuf

Pakistan v Sri Lanka
Mohammad Yousuf was the mainstay of Pakistan's batting

Mohammad Yousuf carried bulk of the batting load for Pakistan and scored runs heavily against every team for a major part of his career. His presence provided stability to the batting line up and he played invaluable knocks to win the games for his side.

In the Natwest Series 2001, Pakistan were up against Australia. Bowling first, Warne ripped through the batting lineup and reduced Pakistan to 85-6. Mohammad Yousuf then went on to add 124 runs for the seventh wicket with Rashid Latif and took Pakistan to a defendable total of 257. Yousuf remained not-out on 91 off 103. His innings included 8 fours.

In return, Australia chased it down and romped by home by seven wickets in just 45.4 overs with key contributions from Ricky Ponting, Michael Bevan and Steve Waugh.

#1 Misbah-Ul-Haq

West Indies v Pakistan: Group B - ICC Champions Trophy
Misbah-Ul-Haq never hit a century in ODIs

Misbah-Ul-Haq made quite an extraordinary impact on Pakistan cricket and under his captaincy, the team touched new heights and he even led the team to number one ranking in Test cricket. He was one of the most consistent batsmen for Pakistan and rarely failed to perform. However, he was unlucky as he never scored a century in one-day cricket.

In their first match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in London, Misbah came close to tasting a century. Playing against West Indies, all the Pakistani batsmen except Misbah failed miserably. Kemar Roach and Sunil Narine ripped the heart out of Pakistan but through all the mayhem, it was the skipper who stuck at one end and scored an unbeaten 96 off 127 balls with five fours and three sixes.

Chasing a paltry score of 171, West Indies struggled but chased it down in the end. Albeit the team lost, Misbah received high praise for his valuable knock to get his side to a decent total.
