Chris Gayle celebrates after reaching his 100 during his unbeaten 175

The 2016 IPL is just entering into the second phase and the teams are ready to sweat it out for glory. In this edition of IPL, there were some records that were broken and created, after all, records are meant to be broken. But there are few records that are hard to be broken.

The records include Chris Gayle’s most number of wickets, Gayle’s fastest ton, Amit Mishra’s three hat-tricks, Gayle’s most number of centuries etc. These records might be broken somewhere down the line but there are few records that need a Himalayan effort to be broken or might last forever. Let us take a look at those records

Chris Gayle’s 175

Only a handful of batsmen have managed to score 175 in an ODI game. But this big man from Jamaica has scored 175 in a T20 match, which is phenomenal. Turning out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors India, Chris Gayle scored a whirlwind unbeaten 175 off 66 balls at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore.

During the knock, Gayle broke the record of fastest 100 in T20s, the highest individual score in T20s and the most number of sixes hit in an innings. It needs a herculean effort from the batsmen to score more than 175 in a T20 innings.

Let alone IPL, a batsman scoring 175 in any T20 match will be a huge task and Chris Gayle’s record for the highest score in T20s might stay forever.

Sohail Tanvir’s six-wicket haul

Sadly, Sohail Tanvir couldn't play more matches in IPL

Sohail Tanvir set the first edition of IPL on fire as he won the purple cap, the award given for the leading wicket-taker in one edition of the IPL and helped his side Rajasthan Royals win the tournament.

In a league game against the Chennai Super Kings at Jaipur, Sohail Tanvir ran through the Super Kings’ batting order and ended up with figures of 6-14, which is the best bowling figures in an IPL match.

Eight seasons have passed and still Tanvir’s record is yet to be broken. No other bowler has managed to take six wickets in an IPL game in the next seven seasons. Sohail Tanvir’s six-wicket haul in IPL is very hard for a bowler to breach and in all likelihood, Tanvir will have his name etched in the history books for a long time.

Suresh Raina’s consecutive matches

Will Suresh Raina miss a match in IPL?
Will Suresh Raina miss a match in IPL?

Indian batsman Suresh Raina is the leading run scorer in IPL with 3873 runs from 133 innings at an average of 34.27. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are slowly catching up with the Gujarat Lions skipper in terms of runs scored in the IPL but the dashing southpaw holds the record which is very difficult to be surpassed.

Ever since making his debut for Chennai Super Kings against Kings XI Punjab at Mohali in 2008 till playing for Gujarat Lions’ last match against the Delhi Daredevils at Rajkot in 2016, Suresh Raina has played 138 matches without missing a single one. He might miss his first IPL match in this season as he is expecting his first child soon.

In a world in which players easily gets dropped owing to poor form or missing matches due to injury/fatigue, Raina’s 138 matches on the trot is likely to stay at the top in the years to come.

Royal Challengers Bangalore’s highest ever team total

23 April 2013 saw a lot of records getting mauled in a single match. It also includes the record that has been stated in the previous slides- Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 off 66 balls. That match also saw Royal Challengers Bangalore post a mammoth 263-5 on the board.

This was not only the highest team total in IPL but also the highest ever total in a T20 match. The second highest T20 total is 260 and in IPL, it’s 246. Without a second thought, one can put their money on this total being at the top of IPL teams’ highest innings total forever.

Apart from Chris Gayle’s 175, AB de Villiers scored a 12 ball 31 and Tillakaratne Dilshan played the sheet anchor’s role for Gayle as he scored a 33 off 36 balls. This match also saw a team and a batsman hitting the most number of sixes in an innings and the fastest 100 in T20s.

37 runs in one over

Once again a record featuring Chris Gayle and Royal Challengers Bangalore but this time from a different match gets into the list. In the 2011 edition, Chris Gayle played his first match for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

In that season against Kochi Tuskers Kerala at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Gayle smashed 36 runs in one over bowled by Prasanth Parameshwaran. Adding to that, the bowler bowled a no-ball and made it 37 opposite to his name.

The first ball was a six followed by another one off a no-ball and the next two was dispatched for fours with the last three balls went for a six, six and a four. Conceding more than 37 runs in an over is very tough to be broken and scoring 36 in one is equally difficult. Either way, this record might stay on forever.
