5 batsmen who got run out most number of times in ODIs

Mohammad Yousuf was not a poor runner at all

Among the more well-known dismissals in cricket, the runout is perhaps one of those that is eminently avoidable and more often than not, it is a bit embarrassing for the batsman who gets out that way. However, it is also important to point out that the clamour for quick singles is far more pronounced in case of ODIs than it is when it comes to Test cricket.

Some batsmen became a bit infamous for being run out quite frequently and for a few of them it reached chronic proportions. Many of them may not have been particularly slow runners but they often failed to judge when to run or their communication with their partners was all over the place.

Be that as it may, here is a look at 5 batsmen who got run the highest number of times in the history of ODI cricket.

#5 Mohammad Yousuf - 38

Now, no one quite conjures up the image of former Pakistan star Mohammad Yousuf when he thinks of run outs but the middle-order batsman was run out as many as 38 times in his ODI career. The figure makes him the 5th most dismissed batsman by way of run outs in the history of ODI cricket.

Was he a poor runner? Not at all and in fact, he was famed for taking singles during the quiet middle overs of an ODI.

However, the fact that he often batted during the slog overs perhaps made it impossible for him to avoid risky singles. He played in 288 ODIs in a career spanning around 12 years (1998-2010) and his run out dismissal percentage stands at 13.92, which is the 2nd highest among the players in this list.

#4 Mahela Jayawardene - 39

Australia v Sri Lanka - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
Mahela Jayawardene’s run out dismissal percentage of 9.33 is the lowest among all players on this list

The former Sri Lankan great may figure in this list but one of the big reasons for Mahela Jayawardene’s presence here has to do with the fact that he played as many as 448 ODIs in his career. In a career spanning around 17 years (1998-2015) and those many games, it is not entirely surprising for a player to be run out a fair few numbers of times. That being said, 39 is still a considerable figure and makes up 9.33 percent of Jayawardene’s dismissals.

The Sri Lankan great was not a bad runner by any stretch of the imagination but over the course of his career he did often get involved in mix-ups with his partners and that was perhaps one of the big factors in him being run out 39 times. However, it is also necessary to point out that Mahela Jayawardene’s run out dismissal percentage of 9.33 is the lowest among all players on this list.

#3 Rahul Dravid - 40

He might be known more for his prowess as one of the world’s greatest Test match batsmen but Indian great Rahul Dravid enjoyed an exceptional ODI career as well. He played in 344 games in a career that spanned around 15 years (1996-2011) and scored 10889 runs.

Dravid was a batsman who was not actually associated with careless running but perhaps the move to the middle-order later on in his career made it necessary for him to take risky singles in the slog overs.

In his whole career, he has been run out 40 times and that remains the third highest for any batsman in ODI history. The run out dismissal percentage stands at a formidable 12.58.

#2 Inzamam-ul-Haq - 40

Inzamam-Ul-Haq is run out
Inzamam’s running between the wickets is something that is always associated with him despite his obvious gifts as a batsman

He was one of the greatest batsmen to have played for Pakistan but throughout his career, Inzamam-u-Haq became a source of glee for cricket fans due to the inexplicable ways in which he often got run out. The middle-order batsman played in 378 ODIs in a career spanning around 16 years (1991-2007) and was dismissed run out on 40 occasions.

Although his girth was often the reason why people found his dismissals funny, Inzamam was not exactly slow in running between the wickets. What seemed to ail him was a distinct deficiency in judging when to run and when not to, which is why it is not really a surprise that he his run out dismissal percentage stands at 11.43.

To this day, Inzamam’s running between the wickets is something that is always associated with him despite his obvious gifts as a batsman.

#1 Marvan Atapattu - 41

Something that stands out in Marvan Atapattu’s career as an ODI batsman is his run out count of 41

The former Sri Lankan captain and opening batsman was one of the most important members of the team’s top order for much of the late 1990s and the noughties. However, something that stands out in Marvan Atapattu’s career as an ODI batsman is his run out count of 41.

It is quite an alarming figure since he played 268 ODIs and that is the lowest among all the other batsmen in this list. Atapattu’s run out percentage of a whopping almost 16% is an indictment of the fact that although he did not look like the most obvious run out candidate, his run out count is quite high.
