5 Batsmen who scored a century in their last Test innings

England v New Zealand
Nasser Hussain

Scoring a century in your last Test is a dream for every Test batsman. No matter how many hundreds you have scored earlier but you always strive for that last hundred in your swansong. It is a perfect scenario to sign off with a last hurrah and makes the moment ever so special.

There have been very few batsmen in the entire Test cricket history who have been able to achieve this feat.

Let's take a look at the last five instances when a batsman retired with a century in his last Test innings.

#5 Nasser Hussain

Former England captain Nasser Hussain was touted as the next big thing when he came on to the scene. He was extremely talented and made his Test debut at an age of 21, which is considered to be early for English standards.

Nasser Hussain never really played to his potential during his international career. He retired at the age of 36. He played his last Test against New Zealand at Lord's in 2004 and scored a match-winning century during his last Test innings. England was chasing a stiff target of 282 to win the Test and Hussain contributed 103 not out to the winning chase.

#4 Jason Gillespie

To find the name of Jason Gillespie in this list is surprising to the core. A man who was known for his bowling skills ended his batting career with a mammoth double hundred.

Jason Gillespie played his last Test on the tour of Bangladesh in 2006 at Chittagong. Bangladesh was a weak team then, as they were still finding their feet in Test cricket. Gillespie was sent in as a night watchman and made full use of the opportunity to score 201 not out. Australia won the match by an innings and 80 runs.

#3 Phil Jaques

2nd Test - Australia v South Africa - Day 1
Phil Jaques

Another surprising name in the list, Phil Jaques played just 11 Test matches for Australia. He had an impressive record during those 11 Test matches and scored 902 runs at an average of 47.47 with 3 centuries. The Australian team was full of stars during that period and Jacques never got many opportunities to represent Australia.

One of his three centuries came in the last innings of his Test career. Jaques played his last Test against West Indies at Bridgetown in 2008 and scored 108. Australia won the match by a margin of 87 runs.

#2 Jacques Kallis

South Africa v India 2nd Test - Day 3

One of the greatest batsmen of the modern era who scored a monumental 45 centuries during his Test career, Kallis fittingly bid adieu to Test cricket in a grand manner.

He played his last Test against India at Durban in 2013 and scored 115 in his last innings. South Africa won the match by a huge margin of 10 wickets.

#1 Alastair Cook

Alastair Cook is one of the best opening batsmen of the current era. He scored 33 centuries during his career and amassed an astonishing 12,472 runs. He made his Test debut against India at an early age of 21.

Cook played his last Test against India at Kennington Oval during the 2018 tour. He scored 147 runs during his final visit to the batting crease and bows out a champion.
