The longest format of the game, the truest and traditional form of the game, has seen numerous changes over the years. One major change was the introduction of protective equipment such as helmets, pads, arm guards, chest guards and so on. With it changed the approach of the batsmen who grew more and more fearless. The balance shifted slightly towards the batsmen. And we saw a new era of batsmanship, an era where previous records were matched, and new ones created with every passing year.

The 1990s and 2000s was a period which produced a number of batsmen, who took batting records by storm and set new benchmarks of batsmanship. Out of many other records, the batsmen of that era dominate the list for most fours in a career.
