5 England players who failed to shine in the IPL

If the IPL has to be described in one word, then 'humongous' would be the apt word to use. To a large number of audience it reaches to the exposure the players get to the money splashed in the league, the IPL has stemmed itself as one of the unsurpassable leagues.

Talking about England cricketers, not many Englishmen have been part of the IPL squadron but some of them have really impressed with the opportunities that have come their way. Ben Stokes has garnered the highest bids for two successive season while Kevin Pietersen was the face of the IPL teams he represented and perhaps some of the England players over the years have merely failed to shine at the event.

5. Sam Billings

Billings will play for CSK this season

The right-handed wicketkeeper-batsman has plied his trade in the IPL for 2 seasons now with the Delhi Daredevils and in the forthcoming season, he will play for the Chennai Super Kings after being bought for his base price of 1 Crore.

The 23-year-old represented DD in the previous two editions of the IPL and out of the 11 games he played Billings only scored a handful of runs. His aggregate IPL tally is at a mere 226 runs with an IPL career average of 22.6.

Billings who captains Kent in England's County cricket is a well-established player in the T20 circuit. He has fared well for Islamabad United, Sydney Sixers but when the occasion is the IPL, Billings has failed to make a mark.

4.Luke Wright

T20 specialist Wright has found no buyers for the fifth consecutive time at the Auctions.

The Englishman Wright is a popular T20 specialist and is welcomed by almost all the T20 franchise leagues in the world. Contrastingly, in the IPL, Wright has played only 7 matches and his lackluster performances in those games have resulted adversely for him.

In 2012, Wright replaced the injured Tim Paine in the now-defunct Pune Warriors India camp and over a period of 2 IPL seasons, he managed only 7 games. He scored an aggregate of 106 runs in 6 outings and failed in the bowling department as well. His economy spiked over 10 runs an over and managed to pick up only 2 wickets.

However, Wright is a regular for Melbourne Stars since 2011 and has plied his trade for as many as eight franchises till date. But his performances in the IPL has been utterly miserable thus going unsold in the subsequent auctions since 2014.

3.Chris Jordan

Despite boasting the potential, Jordan has stuttered in the IPL.One of the prolific ODI bowlers in recent times, Chris Jordan is a fascinating T20 player as well. The right-arm speedster is also handy with the bat in the lower order of the match too.

In the IPL, Jordan was brought in as a replacement for the fierce Mitchell Starc by the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise in the 2016 edition of the IPL. In his first IPL stint, he played 9 matches and possessed an economy of over 9 runs an over with only 11 wickets to his name.

This prompted the RCB unit to release him for the 2017 edition and SRH purchased him for his base price. However, he featured only once and in the recent auctions, he went unsold courtesy his dreary run in the previous two editions.

2.Eoin Morgan

Morgan is one of the potential captaincy candidates for KXIP this season

The England ODI skipper is a popular name in the IPL for many years. Morgan started his IPL career with RCB and when he represents KXIP in the upcoming season, it will be his fourth team.

Morgan's average in the IPL is just 21.35 and has only 4 fifties to his name in his seven-season long career. Although he bats in the middle order, Morgan has displayed a handful of match-winning knocks and hence has been in and out of the playing XI quite frequently.

His strike rate of 121.13 underlines the problems he has encountered while batting in the Indian conditions. Albeit being an experienced campaigner, Morgan's doesn't quite capture the memory for his batting thus making it into this list of players who have failed to shine in the IPL.

1. Tymal Mills

Mills continues to freelance for various T20 franchises but unfortunately not the IPL.

Tymal Mills features at the top of this list because of the sole reason that in the IPL 2017 Auctions, he was acquired for a whopping 12 Crores by RCB. Mills was a part of the franchise's worst-ever run in which they finished at the bottom of the table.

Prior to the auctions, Mills was a highly regarded bowler and with RCB discontinuing their association with Mitchell Starc, they were watching out for an able replacement. He is the second-most expensive player to have been purchased at the auctions.

The 25-year-old played featured only in 5 matches for the RCB unit and was totally ineffective. His bowling economy spiked close to 9 runs and over and in five matches he managed as many wickets thus forcing RCB to release him.

Mills failed to attract any buyers this time around at the auctions despite placing his base price at 1 Crore thanks to his failure to live up to the expectations of the tournament.
