After performing well with the ball, it gives the players extra-confidence to come out and continue their form with the bat and vice-versa. In this article, we look at five famous cricketers who scored a hundred and picked up four wickets in the same match in one-day internationals.


#5 Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh is one of the greatest one-day all-rounders of all-time. He has represented the country in 304 matches and scored 8701 runs at an average of 36.56, accompanied by 52 half-centuries and 14 centuries. Yuvraj, who bowls left-arm spin, also picked up 111 wickets and carried bulk of the load in middle-overs for a long-time.

India hosted England for a 5-ODI series in 2008. After winning the first ODI in emphatic fashion, the hosts wanted to extend the lead by winning the second ODI in Indore. In the 2nd one-day, MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first. Broad rattled through the batting lineup and India were left reeling at 29-3. Yuvraj Singh then took over and scored 118 of 122 balls, with 15 fours and 2 sixes. India posted a chaseable total of 292.

When India came out to bowl, Yuvraj Singh spun a web and dismantled the English batsmen and picked up 4 wickets after conceding just 28 runs in 10 overs. Because of Yuvraj's exploits with the ball, England only managed to score 238 before they got all-out. Yuvraj took home the Man of the Match award.

Chris Gayle is probably the most explosive batsman of all-time. He is a nightmare for bowlers and can smash the opposition bowlers out of the park at will. Gayle has played in 284 matches for West Indies in ODIs and accumulated 9727 runs at an average of 37.13, accompanied by 49 half-centuries and 23 centuries. In the bowling department, he picked up 165 wickets.

West Indies toured Zimbabwe for a 5-matches ODI series in 2003. With series tied at 2-2, the focus was on the fifth ODI at Harare. In the fifth ODI, the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first, but were foxed by Chris Gayle who finished 4/24 in 10 overs. The Zimbabwe team could only score a paltry total of 196.

In return, Gayle came up big, with a century and ended up scoring 112 off 75 balls, accompanied by 17 fours and 2 sixes. The visitors clinched the series and Gayle was adjudged the Man of the Series for his brilliant performances throughout the series.

#3 Sanath Jayasuriya

During his stint, Sanath Jayasuriya was one of the most feared batsmen in the world. He put dagger in the heart of opposition, night in, night out and had a terrific hand-eye coordination. Jayasuriya was also a pretty good left arm orthodox bowler and picked up 323 wickets in 445 matches.

In the 6th ODI of the VB series in 2002-03, Australia won the toss and chose to field first. Sanath Jayasuriya then exploded for 122 off 105, with 12 fours and 4 sixes. The veteran opening duo of Jayasuriya and Atapattu added 237 runs for the opening wicket and Sri Lanka finished with 343-5 in 50 overs.

In return, Australia were looking good at 143-3 at one point of time but Jayasuriya spun a web around the Australian batsmen and picked up 4 wickets for 39 runs in his allotted 10 overs. Australia got all-out for 264 runs and suffered an embarrassing defeat.

Sourav Ganguly is one of the greatest skipper of all-time. He was known for his ability to hit sixes on the off-side with ease and contributed with the ball on umpteen occasions. He played in 311 matches and amassed 11363 runs at an average of 41.02, including 72 fifties and 22 hundreds. He was a right arm medium bowler and picked up 100 scalps in ODIs.

In the 1999 Pepsi Cup, India got destroyed in the first match by Pakistan and were desperate for a win. In the second ODI against Sri Lanka, Ganguly played a very composed knock, scoring 130 off 160, with just 5 fours and 2 sixes. Dravid too chipped in with a century and India posted a total of 287-4 on the board in 50 overs.

When Sri Lanka came out to chase down the total, Ganguly ripped through the middle and lower-middle order, picking up 4 wickets for 21 runs in four overs. Sourav was rightly adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

Sachin Tendulkar is widely acclaimed as the greatest batsman of all-time. He was known for his ability to bowl off-breaks and leg-breaks whenever the captain wanted him to. He represented the country in 463 ODIs and scored 18426 runs at an average of 44.83. Sachin also has 154 scalps to his name.

During the quarter-final of the 1998 International cup, Australia won the toss and put India to bat first. India lost both Ganguly and Azharuddin very early in the innings and were struggling at 8-2. Sachin then built some crucial partnerships with Rahul Dravid and Ajay Jadeja for the third and forth wicket respectively to take India to 307-8 in 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar scored 141 off 128 balls, with 13 fours and 3 sixes.

In return, Australia were at 167-2 at one point of time but Sachin took over once again and rattled the middle-order and picked up 4 wickets after conceding 38 runs in 9.1 overs. Tendulkar was awarded the Man of the Match for his terrific performance with the bat and ball.
