5 of India's biggest wins in Test cricket

England v India: Specsavers 5th Test - Day Five

India recorded their best win in Test cricket today when they defeated West Indies by an innings and 272 massive runs. Many might say that this might be the best victory by an Indian side ever, but most might argue that the West Indian team was extremely amateurish with their playing XI, having a majority of new players.

Nevertheless, the huge win sure is something for the Indian side to relish after their disappointing tour in England. Here is a rundown of India's biggest wins in Test cricket, which incidentally have all been played in India.

#1 India (649-9d) beat West Indies (181 & 196)

Starting off with the very recent one, the match against West Indies is perhaps one of the most one-sided cricket games played, with both the Indian bowlers and batsmen doing their best.

The match which took place at Rajkot, had India batting first and scoring a mammoth 649-9 with both debutante Prithvi Shaw and captain Virat Kohli scoring centuries. Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav took 6 wickets in both the innings, respectively.

#2 India (474) beat Afghanistan (109) and (103)

England Lions v Afghanistan

Even though a lot of people regard the Afghanistan side as an emerging successful team, they succumbed to an embarrassing defeat when they lost by an innings and 262 runs in their first Test played in India.

Both the openers, Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan scored centuries while Hardik Pandya scored an easy 71. In the bowling department, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin both took 4 wickets each in the two innings as the Afghanistan team stumbled.

#3 India (610-6 d) beat Sri Lanka (205) and (166)

India v Sri Lanka - ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 Final
India v Sri Lanka

This game, played in Nagpur in 2017, had Sri Lanka batting first. They registered a meager 205 where Ashwin picked up 4 wickets. India in return, destroyed the Lankan bowling attack.

Captain Virat Kohli scored a double century while Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara and Rohit Sharma scored steady centuries. The Sri Lankan line-up tumbled again as Ashwin picked up 4 wickets in the second innings as well. India won the match by an innings and 239 runs.

#4 India (610-3d) beat Bangladesh (118) and (253)

Bangladesh v India - ICC Champions Trophy Semi Final

This match played in Mirpur in 2007 again showed India's amazing lineup, as four people scored centuries, namely: Dinesh Karthik, Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. MS Dhoni scored a quick half century too.

The bowling lineup under Dravid's captaincy destroyed the Bangladesh's batting as Zaheer Khan picked a five-wicket haul and other bowlers broke the partnerships as well. This was very similar to the match against Sri Lanka, as India won this match by an innings and 239 runs.

#5 India (633) beat Australia (233 and 181)

Australia v India: 3rd Test - Day 4
Australia v India:

Perhaps this could be credited as India's best Test win as it was played against a formidable Australian side in 1998. The Australian side batted first but their batting tumbled to India's bowling as they succumbed to a paltry 233.

The Indians then went on to blast the Australian lineup as the captain Mohammad Azharuddin registered 163 on the scoreboard. VVS Lakshman and Navjot Sidhu scored 95 and 97 each, as Dravid, Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly each scored fifties. But the indestructible Australian lineup perished to a pitiful 183 as Kumble picked up a five-wicket haul. India won by an innings and 219 runs.
