As soon as the new year starts, the excitement about the new season of the IPL starts as well. The IPL Auction for the upcoming season took place on the 19th of December last year where a lot of money was spent on many players.

All the eight franchises came in to fill their vacant spots and it would be fair to say that most of them have done it successfully. The flavour of this year’s auction were the overseas players.

There were high-quality overseas players available in the auction pool and rightly so. All the players around the world want to play the IPL because it is the best T20 league in the world. You ask many young overseas players about their dreams and one of them is playing in the IPL. There are two incentives in the IPL, firstly you get paid a lot and secondly you get to learn from the best in the business.

Every year a set of new overseas players get a chance to participate in the IPL. This year as well some new overseas players will be taking part in the biggest T20 league. So, on that note, let’s have a look at five overseas players who will be making their debut in this IPL season.

1. Sheldon Cottrell - Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab has picked up Sheldon Cottrell for a whopping INR 8.5 crores in this year’s IPL auction. Before the auction, there were talks about Cottrell being one of the top buys and it turned out in the same manner.

After his performance for West Indies in the last 12 months, the left-arm quick deserves the amount which he will get. He is a good addition to the KXIP team as they needed an overseas fast bowler. Cottrell will swing the ball up front and then use his variations towards the end.

In the last year’s CPL, he picked up 12 wickets in eight games at an average of 19.25. He along with Mohammad Shami will form a great combination. All the KXIP fans will be hoping that he would be able to bring out his salute many times in the upcoming IPL.

2. Tom Banton - Kolkata Knight Riders

Tom Banton has raised many people’s eyebrows with his aggressive batting. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) picked up the young opener for just INR 1 crore in this year’s auction.

Banton recently participated in the first half of the BBL for Brisbane Heat and he had a good time there. He scored 223 runs in seven innings at a strike-rate of 176.98. In a game against the Thunder, he smashed a fifty in 16 balls which included five consecutive sixes.

In addition to his aggressive batting, he is a good wicket-keeper as well. KKR would be happy with their buy and they will be hoping he brings the same form in the upcoming IPL.

3. Josh Hazlewood - Chennai Super Kings

When Josh Hazlewood put up his base price for 2 CR many thought that he would go unsold but you never know about a team like Chennai Super Kings (CSK). CSK bought Hazlewood for his base price in this year’s auction.

The 29-year-old pacer was part of the Mumbai Indians squad in one of the seasons but didn’t get a single game. But this time there is a high chance that he would get to play for his franchise.

He isn’t known for his T20 bowling but he can bowl tight and make life difficult for the batsman. Dwayne Bravo is on a downward curve in his career and Lungi Ngidi gets injured frequently so CSK would be hoping that Hazlewood comes good in IPL 2020.

4. Alex Carey - Delhi Capitals

Alex Carey has come leaps and bounds in the last year or so. He was fabulous in the World Cup for Australia. He scored a lot of runs coming in at No.5 and No.6 whenever his team was in trouble.

Delhi Capitals picked up the young wicket-keeper for INR 2.4 crores in this year’s auction. He is a batsman who can bat anywhere in the batting order. The only thing which would worry him is that Delhi already has a young wicket-keeper in Rishabh Pant. So, it is unknown whether he will get a place in the first XI or will he be used as a back-up.

Having said that, he is a great addition to the young Delhi team and they will be hoping he comes good in his first IPL.

5. Fabian Allen - Sunrisers Hyderbabd

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) didn’t buy many players in this auction and was quiet for a long time. But in the players which they bought there was a hidden buy-in, Fabian Allen. They bought the West Indian all-rounder for just INR 50 lakhs.

SRH will miss the services of Shakib Al Hasan this year and so they bought a left-arm spinner who can bat. He isn’t the perfect replacement but still, he will do his job quietly.

He is a good left-arm spinner who likes to keep it tight and can smash a few sixes towards the end of an innings. Like all the West Indians, he is a ferocious hitter with the bat in hand. SRH needed a finisher and Fabian Allen can do that job if given an opportunity.
