5 Stadiums where India has never won a Test match

The current Indian Test team is one of the best on the planet. Under the leadership of skipper Virat Kohli, the Indian Test unit has defeated almost every team in home conditions.

But when it comes to playing overseas, although this team has a better record than its predecessors, the overall results have still been disappointing.

India has never won a Test series in Australia or England, which shows how much they struggle when playing away from home. Sure, they have won multiple Tests overseas, but they have somehow failed to land the killer punch to win enough series.

Moreover, there are certain stadiums where India have never been able to win a Test match. Here's a look at five of those grounds:

#1 Old Trafford, Manchester

England v India: 4th Investec Test - Day One
England v India: 4th Investec Test - Day One

Test Record - Played - 9, Won - 0, Lost - 4, Drawn - 5

Luckily, Old Trafford did not host a single Test match when India toured England earlier this year.

The Indian team has shockingly failed to win a single Test match at Old Trafford in Manchester. They played their first Test here way back in 1936; it has been 82 years since then, but they are yet to register a single win at Old Trafford.

India drew the first two Tests played here, and lost the next two (played in 1952 and 1959 respectively) by huge margins. The last time India played a match at Old Trafford was in 2014 when the MS Dhoni led side was crushed by Alastair Cook's England.

In what was the 4th Test of the series, Dhoni's 71 helped India reach 152 in the first innings. England built a lead of 215 runs and bowled out India for 161 in the 2nd innings to win the match by an innings.

#2 The Gabba, Brisbane

2nd Test - Australia v India: Day 4
2nd Test - Australia v India: Day 4

Test Record - Played - 6, Won - 0, Lost - 5 , Drawn - 1

India have a poor record in the Test matches they have played in Australia. They have won very few matches Down Under, but when it comes to the Woolloongabba Stadium in Brisbane, their record has been downright pathetic.

Out of the 6 Tests they have played against Australia at the Gabba, they have lost 5.

They managed to draw one game when they played here in the year 2003. However, the last time when India played at the Gabba was in the year 2014, where Steve Smith's men defeated MS Dhoni's team by a slender margin of 4 wickets.

Virat Kohli's men are lucky that this stadium will not host any of the Test matches of the ongoing series, as the Australians have established it as their fortress against them.

#3 Newlands, Cape Town

South Africa v India - First Test Day 1 - 2018 Freedom Series
South Africa v India - First Test Day 1 - 2018 Freedom Series

Test Record - Played - 5, Won - 0, Lost - 3, Drawn - 2

South Africa is one more team which has troubled India a lot while playing host. The Proteas have never lost a Test series at home against India. Once ranked No. 1 in the Test rankings, the South African side even defeated the Indian team in January earlier this year.

In the first match of that series, Virat Kohli's men came very close to defeating the hosts, but Faf du Plessis' team eventually won the match by 72 runs.

India had drawn the Test match played in 2011 at Cape Town, but had lost their earlier two matches played in the years 1997 and 2007 by 282 runs and 5 wickets respectively.

Sachin Tendulkar has a 100 to his name on this ground.

#4 Kensington Oval, Bridge Town, Barbados

West Indies and India have not played a test in Bridgetown since 2011
West Indies and India have not played a test in Bridgetown since 2011

Test Record - Played - 9, Won - 0, Lost - 7, Drawn - 2

West Indies were the best test team in the world during much of the late 20th century, but the current team is nowhere near the previous teams. If the Indian team plays a Test match at Bridgetown against West Indies now, they might easily defeat the home team inside 3 or 4 days.

But the fact remains that it has been 7 years since India played a Test match at this venue, so they have been unable to correct their terrible record here.

In the 9 matches that India have played at the Kensington Oval, they have failed to win even a single one. They drew the last Test they played at the venue, but had suffered heavy defeats in 7 of the earlier 8 matches they had played here.

#5 Edgbaston, Birmingham

England v India: Specsavers 1st Test - Day Four
England v India: Specsavers 1st Test - Day Four

Test Record - Played - 7, Won - 0, Lost - 6, Drawn - 1

India and England have played a lot of Test matches in England, but the Indian team has failed to a win a single one at the Edgbaston ground. The Indians have played 7 matches in Birmingham and have lost 6 of those, with the only drawn match coming in the year 1986.

Even in 2018, India suffered a defeat at Edgbaston despite skipper Virat Kohli's best efforts. The Delhiite alone scored 200 runs in the match, while the rest of the batting could only muster 436 runs in 2 innings.

India lost the match by just 31 runs, a performance which was way better than their 2011 debacle. England had drubbed the MS Dhoni-led side back then by an innings and 242 runs inside just 4 days.
