5 times Virat Kohli was dismissed in the 90s

Virat Kohli is one of the most popular players of the current generation and he has achieved this status in a relatively short space of time. He is India's skipper in all the three formats and is a bowler's nightmare on any day and few can claim to have got the better of him consistently.

In ODIs, Virat Kohli scored 9,588 runs in 208 matches at an average of 58.10. He has scored 35 hundreds and 46 half-centuries. When it is all said and done, he will go down as one of the greatest players of all time.

But has got a case of nervous nineties. Throughout his ODI career, he has been dismissed in the 90s five times. Here, we look at those 5 instances when Kohli got dismissed in the 90s.

91 vs Bangladesh, Dhaka, 2010

India was playing Bangladesh in the 3rd ODI of the Tri-Nation tournament in Dhaka. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. They made a decent score of 296 for the loss off 6 wickets on the back of Tamim Iqbal's 60 off 42, Imrul Kayes' 70 off 100. The pair gave them a good opening partnership of 80 runs. In the end, Mahmudullah chipped in with 60 off 45.

In return, India lost a wicket early in the form of their star opener, Virender Sehwag, when he got run-out for 13. Kohli came into bat at No.3 and played a very calculated innings with only 7 boundaries in his entire innings. He stitched a 152-run partnership with MS Dhoni, who scored 101 off 107.

In the 35th over, with the scoreboard reading 203-3, Kohli got out to Shakib Al Hasan, on the final delivery of the over courtesy of a simple return catch. Kohli made 91 off 102 after staying in the crease for 136 minutes. It was a very slow paced innings and though Kohli missed out on a century, he played a fantastic knock to keep India in the game before Dhoni finished off the game with Raina, who scored 51 off 43. This was the first instance when Kohli got dismissed in the 90s.

India toured West Indies in 2011 for 5-match ODI series. After clinching the series already in the first three ODIs, India lost in the 4th one-day by 103 runs and the focus shifted to dead rubber in Kingston. In the final ODI, West Indies won the toss and chose to field first.

The batting team lost its openers very quickly and were left reeling at 21-2 after 7 overs. Kohli, along with Rohit Sharma took India to a score of 251 which was too little to defend for the Indian bowlers and India ultimately lost the game. Kohli made 94 off 104 with 10 fours and got run-out on the last delivery of the 36th over.

This was the second time Kohli missed out on a well-deserved century in the ODIs and the first instance when he got run-out in the 90s.

99 vs West Indies, Visakhapatnam, 2013

India was playing West Indies, in a day-night match at Visakhapatnam in the 2nd ODI of the bilateral series in 2013. The hosts won the first game in Kanpur by 5 wickets and were looking to continue their dominance and clinch the series.

In the 2nd ODI, India lost its opener Rohit Sharma for just 12 runs. Kohli, who came in at No.3, built some key partnerships with Yuvraj Singh and Raina and took India to a competitive total of 288 for the loss off 7 wickets. On the final ball of the 40th over, Kohli got dismissed when he was on 99, thanks to a bouncer from Rampaul.

India went on to lose this game in the last over, behind Darren Sammy's 63 off 45 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes that helped the all-rounder claim the man of the match. This was the first and only instance when he got out on 99.

91 vs Australia, Perth, 2016

India toured Australia in 2016 for a 5-match ODI series. Though India lost the series 1-4 in a very high-scoring series, this series will be remembered for Virat Kohli's heroics throughout the series. He did all he could do to win it for India but the home team was too much to handle for India.

In the first ODI of the series, India won the toss and chose to bat first. India lost its opener Dhawan for just 9 runs off 22 balls. Kohli then stitched a 207-run partnership with Rohit Sharma who exploded for 171* off 163 and remained unbeaten. Kohli made 91 off 97 balls and got out in the 45th over to Faulkner.

Australia, in return, lost its openers in quick succession and were struggling at 21-2. Then, Steve Smith and George Bailey bailed them out with a huge partnership of 242 runs and Australia reached home comfortably. Steve Smith was adjudged the man of the match for his 149 off 135.

92 vs Australia, Kolkata, 2017

In the second ODI during Australia's tour of India in 2017, the hosts won the toss and chose to bat first. Rohit Sharma got dismissed very early for just 7 runs. It was Kohli again who came to the rescue and scored a very important 92 runs off 107 balls with just 8 fours. No one else could get it going and India finished with 252 in 50 overs.

In return, Kuldeep Yadav destroyed the Australian batting line-up and picked up a hat-trick when he dismissed Wade, Agar, Cummins in the 33rd over. India won the game by 50 runs. Bhuvaneswar Kumar picked up 3 wickets and gave only 9 runs with 2 maidens.

This game was the most recent one in which Kohli got dismissed in the 90s missing out again on a well-deserved hundred.
