7 ODI hat-tricks that came in a losing cause

Shahadat Hossain
Hossain was the second Bangladesh bowler to take a hat-trick

The first-ever hat-trick in ODIs was in 1982 by Pakistan's Jalad-ud-Din against Australia. Since then there have been 37 more hat-tricks in ODIs. But while most of them have resulted in victories for their respective countries, some haven't been so lucky.

When you take a hat-trick, you not only take three wickets in three balls but completely destabilise the opposition's batting line-up. So you certainly count yourself unlucky, if you are one of the bowlers who ended up on the losing side despite picking up a hat-trick.

Here are the unlucky seven who picked up ODI hat-tricks but still lost the game:

#1 Shahadat Hossain

24 years after the first hat-trick was taken by a bowler from the sub-continent, another bowler made history for all the wrong reasons. Bangaldesh's Shahadat Hossain played nearly 100 international matches for his country but despite coming with an impressive display of fast bowling he couldn't stop his side from losing.

In the third ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2006, Bangladesh were bowled out for 236. In response, the hosts looked to be cruising to victory with Brendan Taylor playing a good hand and six wickets still in the bag. But Hossain picked up three wickets in three balls and turned the game on its head, reducing them to 151/7 in the 39th over.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as an unbeaten 79 from Taylor and a crucial 33 from Tawanda Mupariwa saw Zimbabwe home by two wickets. Despite being the first Bangladesh bowler to take an ODI hat-trick, Shahadat was left disappointed as he became the first bowler to end up on the losing side even after picking up a hat-trick.

#2 Shane Bond

Shane Bond

Shane Bond's international career might not have lasted very long but he certainly made an impact in the time that he played. His favourite opponents were Australia, against whom he picked up 44 wickets in 17 matches. In the second match of CB series against Australia in 2007, he picked up four, including a hat-trick but it still wasn't enough for victory.

After electing to bat, Australia got off to a flyer thanks to their two openers, Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. Going into the final over the game, Australia were looking at a total in excess of 300 and Bond was trying to limit the damage.

But he did more than that as he got rid of the two set batsmen, Andrew Symonds and Cameron White in successive balls before uprooting Nathan Bracken's stumps to claim his maiden ODI hat-trick. The hosts eventually finished on 289 but the Kiwis could only manage 184 in response to hand the Aussies a comfortable victory.

#3 Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga
This was the first of Malinga’s three ODI hat-tricks

Lasith Malinga's prowess as a limited-overs specialist are legendary. So it is no surprise that he is the bowler with the most hat-tricks in ODI history and the only bowler to take three ODI hat-tricks. Yet, he also became only the third bowler to lose, despite taking a hat-trick.

It was the Super-eight of the 2007 ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa. They didn't make the most of it though as they were bundled out for 209. In reply, the Proteas were cruising to victory until Malinga gave them a scare.

Needing just four runs to win, Graeme Smith's side lost four wickets in four balls, including the set Jacques Kallis to crumble to 207/9. However, it still wasn't enough as SA won with a wicket in the bag.

#4 Daniel Christian

Daniel Christian

Bagging the honour of being the first Australian to take a hat-trick and finish on the losing side is all-rounder Daniel Christian. What made it even worse Christian was the fact that he was ably assisted by James Pattinson, who took four wickets and had fifties from captain Shane Watson and David Hussey.

At the MCG in 2012, Sri Lanka looked on course for a big total with Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne going great guns. But after Pattinson got rid of the former, Christian took over as he ran through the lower middle order.

Mathews went first but it was the fall of Thisara Perera, which started the hat-trick. Two more wickets in the next two balls meant he not only became the fourth Australian to take an ODI hat-trick but also recorded his career-best ODI bowling figures and restricted Sri Lanka to 238. In reply, the all-rounder fell cheaply but it also didn't help that only four players got into double digits for Australia as they eventually lost by 9 runs.

#5 Clint McKay

Clint McKay
McKay got Australia off to the perfect start but it wasn’t enough

A top order collapse in the fourth ODI of the Natwest series 2013 meant Australia were fighting an uphill battle to maintain their 1-0 lead after being put into bat. However, a gritty 87 from George Bailey coupled with two cameos from Adam Voges and Matthew Wade helped the visitors finish on 227.

Defending that was always going to be difficult and if they were to have any chance, Australia needed early wickets. And Clint McKay supplied just that. Not one, not two but three wickets. In his second over, the Aussie fast bowler got rid of Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root off the first three balls to leave England reeling at 8/3.

At the end of his spell, he had done his bit with figures of 10-3-39-4. However, figures from Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler meant England got home in the final over with three wickets and three balls to spare.

#6 Prosper Utseya

Prosper Utseya

In the third match of the triangular series in 2014, Zimbabwe's decision to field was looking like the wrong call as Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla were scoring for fun. But that was before Prosper Utseya came on to bowl for his second spell.

With the score at 142/0 after 24 overs, Utseya came in and first dismissed Amla for 66. Then de Kock followed in the next over as steered his shot to the fielder at short third-man who took an excellent catch. Rilee Rossouw and David Miller soon followed him to give Utseya his hat-trick and become only the second Zimbabwean bowler to get a hat-trick.

Although he finished with a five-wicket haul and restricted the Proteas to 231, when they looked set for a score well in excess of 300, Zimbabwe's batsmen couldn't chase it down. They eventually lost the game by 61 runs and Utseya had to accept defeat despite claiming the Man of the Match award.

#7 Steven Finn

Steven Finn
Finn’s hat-trick didn’t stop England from getting thrashed

While there have been several hat-tricks in ODIs, only six hat-tricks had been taken in a World Cup game. On Valentine's day 2015, Steven Finn became the seventh bowler to take a hat-trick in the tournament but unfortunately for him, he joined Lasith Malinga as the only other bowler to take one in a World Cup and still end up on the losing side.

In their opening game of the 2015 World Cup, England took on Australia. Having won the toss, England elected to field and a century from Aaron Finch and fifties from George Bailey and Glenn Maxwell meant that England were made to regret their decision. Their only solace came from an unlikely hat-trick for Finn, who went into the final over of the innings with figures of 63/2 from 9 overs.

Three wickets off the last three balls of the match gave Finn a hat-trick, a five-for and England something to cheer as they went into the dressing room. However, it proved to be too much for the visitors who, despite an unbeaten 98 from James Taylor could only muster 231 before being bowled out.
