Batsmen with most ducks in ODIs

A duck-out can be very punishing for the batsman and has the ability to hamper the batsman's confidence. A lot of ducks also mean that the batsman is going to be put on the chopping block by the selection committee.

It requires a lot of character and mental strength to come back from a series of ducks and make it big. While no one would want to get out for nought, for the bowling team, it gives a huge confidence and they bowl with rejuvenated spirits.

#5 Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas - 25

Muralitharan and Vaas made surprise entries to this list

Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas carried the Sri Lankan bowling responsibilities on their shoulders for a very long time. Muralitharan scored just 674 runs in 162 innings while Vaas scored 2025 runs in 220 innings.

The off-spinner usually batted at No.10 and never really had the ability to get some crucial runs in the end. Vaas, on the other hand, was not really unfamiliar with the bat and even scored a test century against Bangladesh in 2007.

Both the bowlers were sent back to the pavilion without scoring on 25 occasions and made surprise entries to this batsmen-dominated list.

#4 Mahela Jayawardene - 28

VB Series - 2nd Final: Australia v Sri Lanka
Jayawardene was out without troubling the scorers on a lot of occasions

Mahela Jayawardene is definitely one of the most reliable batsmen to have ever played for Sri Lanka. Together with Kumar Sangakkara, he shouldered the Lankan batting burden for a large part of his playing career.

He played in 448 matches and scored 12650 runs at an average of 33.38, accompanied by 19 hundreds and 77 fifties. Mahela is third on the list of highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in one-day internationals.

Jayawardene, who was very consistent with the bat, got out without troubling the scorers on 28 occasions in 418 ODI innings.

#3 Wasim Akram - 28

COLOMBO - SEPTEMBER 12: Wasim Akram of Pakistan is bowled out during the Sri Lanka v Pakistan openi
Wasim Akram was very inconsistent with the bat

Wasim Akram is one of the greatest pacers to ever play the sport of cricket. 'The Sultan of Swing' was a nightmare to the batsmen and even the best of the batsmen found it difficult to play his inswingers.

He featured in 356 matches and scored 3717 runs at an average of 16.52 with six half-centuries. Albeit Akram had the ability, he was inconsistent with the bat and that is one of the main reasons why he is on this infamous list.

Akram, who dismissed a lot of all-time greats for duck, was on the receiving end too on a lot of occasions and had 28 ducks in 280 innings.

#2 Shahid Afridi - 30

Pakistan v England - 2nd One Day International
Shahid Afridi always played to entertain the crowd

Shahid Afridi was known for his monster hitting. The bowler and the format rarely mattered and he always played to entertain the crowd with meaty-blows. Because of this, he holds the record for highest sixes in the ODIs with 351 and no one is even close to breaking this record and it looks as safe as houses.

Afridi wore the green jersey in 398 matches and scored 8064 runs at a very sub-par average of 23.58, accompanied by 39 fifties and six hundreds. Afridi never took time to settle and went slam-bang from the word go.

The all-rounder was dismissed for nought on 30 occasions in the ODI and is definitely a record he would not have loved to make his way into.

#1 Sanath Jayasuriya - 34

Australia v Sri Lanka - Commonwealth Bank Series
Sanath Jayasuriya holds the record for highest ducks in one-day internationals

We have another Sri Lankan dominate this very infamous list. Sanath Jayasuriya is arguably one of the most explosive batsmen of all-time. He was a brilliant timer of the ball and had a beautiful hand-eye coordination. The southpaw was a bowler's nightmare everytime he walked in to bat.

Jayasuriya represented the country in 445 matches and accumulated 13430 runs at an average of 32.36, with 28 hundreds to go with 68 fifties. In the bowling department, he picked up 323 wickets and had the ability to trouble the set batsmen.

He holds the record for highest ducks in one-day internationals with 34 and this is because Jayasuriya always believed in his "hit out or get out" process.
