BCCI has no right to form ad-hoc committee: Mehmood Abdi

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) The ad-hoc body set up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is illegal and it is only the Registrar of Co-operative Societies that can form a committee under Rajasthan Sports Act, 2005 to run the affairs of cricket in the state, said Mehmood M. Abdi, deputy president of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA).

Abdi said that both BCCI and RCA are registered bodies under the Registrar of Co-operative Societies and it is only the registrar who is authorised to form an ad-hoc committee if needed.

The BCCI reportedly is planning to set-up a five-member committee, headed by former India batsman Brijesh Patel, to run the affairs of Rajasthan cricket replacing the suspended RCA, which is headed by Lalit Modi, who has been expelled by the board.

Abdi, who is also the lawyer of former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Modi, said even the BCCI constitution doesn't give it the right to form an ad-hoc committee.

"Registrar of Co-operative Societies, Rajasthan government has clearly affirmed today that under the Rajasthan Sports Act,2005 any ad-hoc committee can only be formed by the registrar and no person or association other than the registrar is competent to appoint Ad-hoc Committee and any such committee will be contrary to Rajasthan Sports Act.2005," said Abdi in a statement.

"The stand of RCA has been vindicated. We have also apprised the office of registrar that RCA has not entered into MoU or agreement which authorises BCCI to appoint any ad-hoc committee and have also apprised him that BCCI is a society registered under the Tamil Nadu Society Registration Act and even the BCCI constitution does not provide for formation of ad-hoc committee," said Abdi.

The BCCI had suspended the RCA after Modi was elected its president in December last year.

According to media reports, the BCCI committee had met state government officials to present its stand of protecting the interests of the state.
