The backstory

One of the greatest players in the history of Indian cricket, Yuvraj Singh, was called up to the Indian squad in 2000, when he was selected to represent India in the ICC Knockout Trophy. Thus kicked off a legendary career that not many would ever be able to replicate.

Yuvi's courageous knock of 84 off 80 deliveries against Australia in the quarterfinals sealed the win for India, but he managed to score a measly 14 in the final against New Zealand, leading to India's defeat.

In the 2011 World Cup, his dream run saw him deliver an all-round performance consisting of 362 runs and 15 wickets, which resulted in India becoming world champions after 28 years, and Yuvraj bagging the Man of the Tournament award. Sadly, this was the peak of his career, after which he was not able to produce at the same level again.

The incident

Back in 2013, Yuvraj appeared in a promotional video of Puma Cricket Studio, and proceeded to recall an incident from the past, which ended up humbling him for life.

It's no secret that Yuvraj considers Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar his idol. He clearly stated in the World Cup 2011 post-final interview that he and others did it for Sachin. In this promotional appearance, Yuvi talked about an incident from Australia's tour of India, when he had failed to make an impact with the bat in a match at Mumbai, against their long-time rivals.

He came back to the dressing room and hit his bat on the floor in a fit of rage. The bat immediately broke into pieces. The incident caught Sachin's eye, and he was livid.

He told me you earn your money, you earn your food because of cricket… So, don’t ever do that again and I never did that again.

The aftermath

Today, on June 10th 2019, Yuvraj Singh announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, after failing to bag a place in the Indian team after repeated attempts. Nevertheless, the legend of Yuvraj Singh will live on forever in the annals of cricket history, as well as the millions of fans who adore and worship him.
