Virat Kohli after scoring his second hundred in the series

Despite showing some fight India lost the Test series against England 4-1. India had their moments in all of the matches except the Lord's test match. But they couldn't make them count.

Now it's time to reflect back and take a look at some of the best players for India in the series. Here are the "5 best players for India in the test series."

#1 Virat Kohli

Without a doubt, Virat Kohli was the best player for India in the series. In fact, he was the best batsmen in the series. He scored 593 runs at an average of 59.30, which includes two hundred and three half-centuries.

The major concern for everyone before the series started was if Virat would be able to cope with the swinging conditions of England or will it be a repeat of 2014. Kohli answered and answered with some authority.

The main threat to Kohli was Jame Anderson. In 2014, Anderson got him out four times. Kohli was very much vulnerable against the deliveries outside the off stump. But on this tour, Kohli didn't give him the wicket even once in the 10 innings that he played

Kohli's best innings had to be the one played at Trent Bridge 103 off 197 balls. In the first innings of the same test match, Kohli missed the ton by just 3 runs. With the help, of his knocks, India registered a huge win in the 3rd test match of the series by 203 runs.

Virat Kohli was the highest run-getter in the series. The fact that second run-getter Jos Butler with 394 runs was 199 runs behind Kohli proves his dominance with the bat in the series.

#2 Ishant Sharma

England v India: Specsavers 1st Test - Day Three
Ishant Sharma took 5/51 in the second innings of the first test

Ishant Sharma has been in and around this Indian team for about 11 years now. He had only shown glimpses of his abilities on some overseas tour but wasn't consistent enough. But on this tour, he was India's best bowler.

Ishant was one of the best bowlers in the series. He was consistent throughout the series. He was troubling the English batsmen with his line, length, and swing.

Ishant picked up 18 wickets in the 5 match series and was the top wicket-taker for India and was second in the series behind Anderson. His fiery spell of 13-0-51-5 at Birmingham almost gave India the victory. He ripped apart England's middle order in the second innings of the test match.

#3 Mohammed Shami

England v India: Specsavers 3rd Test - Day Four
Mohammed Shami was India's second best bowler in the series

Another best player of the series as far as India are concerned is Mohammed Shami. He may not have picked up a 5 wicket haul in an innings but he was consistently among wickets throughout the series.

Shami used to come to bowl as a third bowler and did a pretty good job to maintain the pressure created by the opening bowlers. Kohli used him well with the older ball and Shami didn't disappoint either.

Shami picked up 16 wickets in the series and was India's second highest wicket-taker, while was at no. 4 in the leading wicket-takers list for the series. Although many consider him as the unlucky bowler of the series as he bowled consistently but couldn't pick up many wickets for his efforts.

#4 Cheteshwar Pujara

England v India: Specsavers 4th Test - Day Two
Pujara scored a brilliant 132* at Southampton

There are very few batsmen in this Indian team, who can say that they had a good series in England. Cheteshwar Pujara is one of them who had a good series with the bat.

Pujara was shockingly not picked for the first test at Edgbaston. He has been one of the most reliable test batsmen in the overseas recently and his omission in the first test obviously drew criticism.

In the third test at Nottingham, which India won Pujara played a crucial inning of 72 runs in the second innings. He was involved in a brilliant partnership with captain Kohli which helped India set a huge target.

In the fourth test match, Pujara showed his quality by scoring a 132*. He batted with the tail and took the Indian total ahead of The England total.

Pujara scored 278 runs in the series at an average of 39.71 with one hundred and one fifty.

#5 Jasprit Bumrah

England v India: Specsavers 3rd Test - Day Four
Jasprit Bumrah proved to be very effective in English conditions

Jasprit Bumrah's injury was obviously a setback for India in the first two test match. He was dearly missed at Lord's where conditions were extremely bowler friendly.

Bumrah showed in the 3rd test itself why he is rated so highly in world cricket. He picked up 7 wickets in his comeback test while he picked up 5 wickets in the second innings.

Bumrah was able to swing the ball at a good pace. He made the life of the English batsmen very difficult in the crease. In just three matches he ended up as the series' fifth highest wicket taker with 14 wickets.
