The percentage of wins earned by touring sides in Tests has been dismal since the inception of the game. The win percentage of the visiting side has stayed in the range of 20% to 30% for the past century.

In the 2010s, the winning percentage of touring side is 27%. It hasn't improved drastically from the last decade which stands at 23%. While the pitches in Australia and South Africa offer bounce, the tracks in England and New Zealand offer plenty of swing. In India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh spinners dominate the game from the ball go.

If playing on different surfaces isn't challenging enough, the balls are different too. While India uses SG ball, England uses Dukes ball. Kookaburra is used in all other parts of the world.

There are some grounds in the world where the opponents have struggled for decades. Here is the list of four grounds which acts as a fortress for home teams.

#1 SuperSport Park - South Africa

SuperSport Park is in Centurion, South Africa. This ground is hosting games since 1995 and is considered to have some of the best players' facilities in the world. There have been 23 Test matches played in this ground since then. Out of the 23 games, South Africa has won 18 games losing just two. They lost only to England in 2000 and Australia in 2014 in their 23-year history.

The Proteas has the habit of winning big in this ground. Eight of their 18 wins are innings victories. No touring side except Australia was comfortable in this ground. Recently, South Africa beat India by 135 runs in the latest series.

The pitch is a heaven for the fast bowlers as the leading wicket-takers are all fast-bowlers. Dale Steyn is leading the pack with 56 wickets with Ntini is in the close 2nd.

Brisbane Cricket Ground is in the suburb of Woolloongabba, Australia. Gabba is a historical ground hosting Test matches since 1931. For the past 83 years, Australia has played 60 games, losing just eight. Yes, Australia just lost eight Test matches in their 83-history.

Australia recently beat England at Gabba in the last Ashes series by 10 wickets. Australia has fortified this ground furthermore for the past three decades. They haven't lost a single Test match since 1988 winning 22 games from 28 games. The remaining six games ended on a draw.

Micheal Clarke and Greg Chappell were averaging more than 100 in this ground. As far as bowlers are concerned, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath were the most successful bowlers together taking 133 wickets in this venue.

Edgbaston is one of the finest grounds in England. Edgbaston has hosted 51 Test matches so far. England has won 28 of those games losing just eight. Fifteen of those games ended in a draw.

England hasn't lost a game in Edgbaston for the past 10 years. Since 2008, they have won six of the eight games they have played. Recently, they beat India by 31 runs in the 1st Test match setting a platform for a series win.

The venue predominantly favours bowlers with the likes of Ian Botham, James Anderson, Start Broad, Shane Warne enjoyed bowling here. Shane Warne, particularly, had a liking for this ground as he took 25 wickets from his four games ending with an average of 21.76.

#4 National Stadium - Pakistan

National Stadium at Karachi is the highest capacity cricket stadium in Pakistan. It can hold 34,228 spectators. The stadium hosted 41 Test matches from 1955 to 2009 where the opponents managed to beat Pakistan just twice. England beat them once in 2000; South Africa again beat them in 2007. Before 2000, Pakistan never lost a game in 45 years in that venue.

On the flip side, the touring sides managed to draw 18 of the 41 games. National Stadium has a typical Sub-continental wicket where the fast bowlers dominate the 1st session, batsman pile runs for the first three days and then the spinners take charge on the last two days.

Abdul Qadir leads the chart with 59 wickets from his 13 games here. Javed Miandad scored 1393 runs with an average of 58.04 from his 17 matches in the National Stadium.

It's a shame that this historic venue is not hosting matches for more than a decade since no team is travelling to Pakistan after the attack on the visiting Sri Lankan team.
