The 2007 Cricket World Cup was hosted by the West Indies. Despite having a formidable squad with the most iconic players, India failed to make it past the group stage.
The Men in Blue were pitted against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bermuda in Group B.
17 March 2007. Indian fans who have been following cricket for a while now will never be able to forget this date. It is the day when India suffered a defeat against Bangladesh and the hefty blow virtually eliminated them from the World Cup.
India batted first after winning the toss but were only able to post a total of 191 on board. Ganguly was the top scorer as he made 66 off 129 deliveries. Yuvraj Singh also chipped in with a well-made 47 off 58 deliveries but the others were not able to trouble the scoreboard much.
The fifties from Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Tamim Iqbal helped The Lions chase down the total in 48.3 overs. It remains one of the most popular victories in Bangladesh cricket history.

India faced Bermuda in their 2nd match and completely demolished the opposition. They put on 413/5 after being put in to bat. In response, Bermuda could only amass 156 runs and India won the match by a massive 257 runs.
A defeat to Sri Lanka in the final group match was the nail in the coffin and the Indians were eliminated from the 2007 World Cup.
Australia were crowned the Champions after their dominating display throughout the tournament.

#1 Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly was the opener in all 3 of India's matches during the 2007 World Cup. Although the veteran stroke-maker scored 66 against Bangladesh, he was heavily criticized for playing a slow inning.
The Bengal-born player has had a brilliant career otherwise and is regarded as one of the best batsmen of all time.
The 46-year-old amassed 7212 runs in 113 Tests at an average of 42.17 and 11363 runs in 311 ODIs at an average of 40.73. The talismanic leader was a key cog of the team during his prime.
Ganguly was famously known as 'Dada' and the Prince of Calcutta. The left-handed player announced his retirement from International cricket in 2008 but played Kolkata Knight Riders and later Pune Warriors India in the IPL.
Dada is currently the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal. The God on the off side is also appointed as the President of the Editorial board with Wisden India. Besides this, Ganguly is a member of IPL's technical committee.
#2 Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag hit a fiery century against Bermuda during the 2007 World Cup. Viru also hit 48 off 46 against Sri Lanka in the group stage encounter. He was one of India's better performers during the World Cup.
The destructive batsman played 104 Tests for India in which he amassed 8586 runs at an average of 49.34. The Nawab of Najafgarh also scored a cumulative 8273 in 251 ODIs. He was an occasional right-arm off-break bowler as well and clinched 96 wickets in his ODI career.
Sehwag announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on 20 October 2015. He represented Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
The Indian legend was part of the 2007 World T20 Winning Team. Currently, Sehwag is an extremely popular cricket commentator as well as a big social media personality.
His witty and tongue-in tweets often go viral on the internet. Viru is also renowned for posting videos of short summaries after matches as well as match previews. He is also the owner of Sehwag International School & Sports Academy.
#3 Robin Uthappa
Robin Uthappa could never really cement his place in the Indian team. The Coorg-born player played 46 ODIs for India in which he scored 934 runs at an average of 25.94.
The wicketkeeper-batsman is remembered for playing a couple of good knocks during the ICC World T20 in 2007. In all, Uthappa played 13 T20Is for India and scored 249 at the average of 24.9.
He has represented multiple IPL franchises such as Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India, and Kolkata Knight Riders. The 33-year-old was retained by KKR ahead of the 2019 IPL season. He is also IPL's 5th highest run scorer of all time after Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Gautam Gambhir.
Apart from playing in the domestic T20 league, Uthappa also plies his trade for Saurashtra in first-class cricket. The right-handed batsman is also seen as an analyst in some prominent TV shows.

#4 Sachin Tendulkar
Little Master, Master Blaster, God of Cricket - Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is known by many names and is one of the most loved cricketers of all time. The right-handed batsman went on to make innumerable records in his career which spanned nearly 24 years.
15921 runs in 200 Tests at an average of 53.79, 18426 runs in 463 ODI matches at an average of 44.83 - Tendulkar's career statistics are just astounding. The Mumbai-born player also holds a special record of scoring 100 (51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs) international centuries in his career.
16 November 2013 is the date when SRT announced retirement from all forms of cricket and the entire nation wept as he gave his farewell speech. He persevered to fulfill his dream of lifting the World Cup in 2011.
Post-retirement, Sachin has become an able businessman. The Little Master is the owner of Bengaluru Blasters, a Premier Badminton League franchise. Kerala Blasters, a prominent ISL club, is also majorly owned by him. The veteran player owns SRT10 sports management company and still endorses a lot of brands.
He is known to appear on cricket chat shows as an analyst but his appearances are rare.
#5 Rahul Dravid (c)
Rahul Dravid was one of the classiest batsmen of his time. Although he was initially discredited due to his poor strike rate, Dravid eventually proved himself and went on to become one of India's best batsmen of all time.
'The Wall' scored 13288 runs in 164 Tests at an average of 52.31, 10889 runs in 344 ODIs at an average of 39.17. He became an integral part of the team and he was always there whenever the Men in Blue needed someone to steady the ship.
Dravid possessed a brilliant game sense and was an astute leader. Besides being India's overseas batting consultant, Dravid is currently at the helm of things in his coaching career. A humble personality, Dravid is currently in charge of India's Uner-19 team as well as India A.
The veteran player also works with the GoSports Foundation, with whom he has collaborated to begin a mentorship programme for budding Olympians and Paralympians.
#6 Yuvraj Singh
Once known to be a destructive batsman and effective Left-arm spinner, Yuvraj Singh is well past his glory days.
The 37-year-old was renowned for being one of the greatest finishers in white ball cricket.
He was a key figure whenever India went on to win something big. The all-rounder played a crucial role during the ICC World T20 winning campaign and was also named the Man of the Tournament during the 2011 World Cup.
Yuvraj was at the pinnacle of his career and in sublime form but destiny had other plans for him. He was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor towards the end of 2011. Yuvi could never get back to what he was ever again despite undergoing the best of treatment.
A pale shadow of his former self, the Chandigarh-born player is still a fighter. He has made odd comebacks in the national team and still plays for Punjab in the Ranji trophy.
Yuvraj has also been bought by the Mumbai Indians and will be seen playing for them in the upcoming IPL season.
#7 MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni had established his place in the team when India played the 2007 World Cup. He remains one of India's most successful captain ever. The wicketkeeper-batsman is the first captain to win the World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the World T20.
Who can forget the winning six Dhoni hit to help India lift the World Cup trophy in 2011? The veteran player boasts an excellent record. He has amassed 10366 runs in 336 ODIs at an average of 50.81. He has also accumulated 4876 runs in 90 Tests at the average 38.09. Dhoni's record is highly impressive in the shortest format as well: 1487 runs in 93 T20Is at an average of 37.17 and strike rate 127.09.
Mahi retired from Tests on 30 December 2014 but still remains an integral part of the national team in white ball cricket. He is currently a part of India's squad on tour of New Zealand.
Although Dhoni did not enjoy the best of form in 2018, his ability behind the stumps cannot be doubted. The Ranchi-born player has also found his form with the bat again as he scored 3 consecutive fifties in the match against Australia.

#8 Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik was just 21 when the 2007 World Cup took place. He is another player who was always in an out of the squad. Despite his sporadic appearances, the Chennai-born Wicketkeeper-batsman has gone on to have a decent career.
The Right Handed Batsman amassed 1700 runs in the 89 ODIs he has played, and 352 runs in 27 T20I at an average of 35.2.
DK has established himself as one of the best finishers in limited overs cricket. He played a great cameo of 25* in an ODI match against Australia recently.
The 33-year-old has previously represented Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals), Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Lions in the IPL. DK is currently the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and a vital cog in the team.
Besides playing for the national team and in the IPL, Karthik also plays for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy. The classy player has a good chance of making it to the 2019 World Cup squad as well.
#9 Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh remained an integral part of the Indian national team till 2011. Even though he received occasional call-ups to both the ODI and Test team after 2011, the Jalandhar-born player could never really cement his place back in the team. He last played an ODI for India on October 25, 2015, and his last Test was against Sri Lanka from August 12-15, 2015.
He clinched 417 wickets in 103 Tests, 269 wickets in 236 ODIs, and 25 wickets in 28 T20Is.
Although Harbhajan has not officially announced retirement from international cricket, a return to the national team seems highly improbable. He does not even play First class cricket anymore.
However, the Turbanator still plays in the IPL. He represented Mumbai Indians from 2008 to 2017 and joined Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2018 edition.
The fact that Harbhajan can also be seen as a commentary/talk show expert frequently now is another indication that his playing career is nearing an end.
#10 Ajit Agarkar
Ajit Agarkar was one of the best pace bowlers of his time. The 41-year-old picked up an impressive 288 wickets in the 191 ODIs he played for the Men in Blue. The Mumbai-born player also scalped 58 wickets in 26 Tests he played.
He is still India's all-time 3rd highest wicket-taker in ODIs. Only Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble are above him. Agarkar played in the IPL as well - playing for Delhi Daredevils from 2011 to 2013 and for Kolkata Knight Riders from 2008 to 2010. He had a lackluster IPL career wherein he only picked up only 29 wickets in 42 matches and also had an expensive economy rate of 8.83.
The veteran fast bowler retired from all forms of cricket in 2013. Currently, Agarkar is a cricket analyst for a prominent website. He shares his thoughts and ideas about the game in popular talk shows as well.
#11 Zaheer Khan
Another veteran fast bowler, Zaheer Khan had a glorious career. He would have become a bigger legend had his career not been marred by injuries.
Zak clinched 311 wickets in 92 Tests, scalped 282 wickets in 200 ODIs, and 17 wickets in 17 T20Is. He is India's 4th highest wicket-taker (in ODI's) of all-time behind Kumble, Srinath, and Agarkar.
The left-arm fast-medium bowler remained a prominent part of the team until 2012. Zaheer was regarded for his accurate toe-crushing yorkers. The Indian speedster retired from all forms of International cricket on 15 October 2015.
The Maharashtra-born player, did, however, continue playing in the IPL till 2017. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Daredevils are the three franchises Zaheer has represented in India's most prominent domestic T20 league.
Currently, Zaheer makes frequent appearances on various talk shows - both online and on television and has become a cricket pundit. He is also associated with Mumbai Indians as their Director of Cricket Operations.
#12 Munaf Patel
Munaf Patel was all about sticking to the basics. He was a no-nonsense bowler who stuck to line and length to produce the desired results.
The lanky pacer achieved a good amount of success as well. He picked up 86 wickets in 70 ODI matches at an economy rate of 4.95.
Gujarat Lions, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals are some of the IPL franchises the Indian speedster represented.
He was also the unsung hero when India lifted the World Cup trophy in 2011. Munaf picked up 11 wickets in the 8 matches he played.
With the arrival of players such as Shami, it became difficult for Munaf to cement his place in the playing XI. The Gujarat-born player continued to persevere in first-class cricket and played for Baroda in the Ranji Trophy. He played his last Ranji match on 2 February 2017.
Recently, Munaf announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November 2018. He had realized that he was not making the same kind of impact he used to during his peak years and also that his "age had come."
He is currently in the process of figuring out what to do after retirement. As Munaf is not very outspoken, a career as a cricket analyst or commentator, which is the option followed by many of his former teammates, seems unlikely.
#13 Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble is the most successful Indian bowler. He has an illustrious career. 337 wickets in 271 matches at an average of 30.89 and economy rate of 4.30; 619 wickets in 132 Test matches at an average of 29.65 and economy rate of 2.69, Kumble's figures are just astounding.
The veteran leg break bowler is India's highest wicket-taker of all time in both ODIs and Tests. The 48-year-old is also third on the list of all-time highest wicket-takers in Test cricket, behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.
The Bengaluru-born player also represented Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2008 to 2010. He picked up 45 wickets in the 42 IPL matches at an economy rate of 6.58.
Anil Kumble announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in November 2008. The veteran spinner was appointed as India's head coach on 24 June 2016 but stepped down on 20 June 2017 after an alleged fallout with captain Kohli.
He is currently an active member of the National Cricket Academy and mentors budding cricketers apart from being the Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee.
#14 Irfan Pathan
Untimely injuries destroyed a career that was touted for being one of immense success. Yes, we are talking of the Indian speedster Irfan Pathan.
Irfan was an important part of the 2007 World T20 winning Indian team. He picked up 10 wickets in the 7 matches at a strike rate of 13.2 and a brilliant economy rate of 6.77.
Pathan could never really cement his place in the side after this triumph. Overall, the 34-year-old picked 100 in 29 Tests, 173 in 120 ODIs, and 28 wickets in 24 T20Is.
The Baroda-born player was the classiest swing bowler and it was a delight to watch him bowl when he was at his best. Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Gujarat Lions are the IPL teams Irfan has represented.
He was even a contestant at a dance reality show in 2015. Even though it has been over 6 years since he last played an International match, Pathan has not given up. The Indian speedster is currently playing for Jammu and Kashmir in the Ranji trophy. His is another story of unfulfilled potential.
#15 S Sreesanth
Sreesanth is a player whose career for the Indian team was always topsy-turvy. The Indian speedster picked up 87 wickets in the 27 Tests he played for the Men in Blue. He also has 75 wickets in 53 ODIs.
The Kothamangalam-born player was a part of the Indian team when they lifted the 2007 World T20 trophy and triumphed at the 2011 World Cup. In fact, it was Sreesanth who took the catch during the final of the World T20 that made India champions.
The 35-year-old last played a Test match on August 18, 2011, and his last ODI was against Sri Lanka on April 2, 2011.
The spot-fixing scandal during the 2013 IPL virtually ended his playing career as he was banned for life. Even though the ban was lifted by the Kerala High court in 2017, making a return to international cricket at age 35 is near to impossible.
Sreesanth has also focussed on the entertainment industry and featured on some television shows - the latest being Khatron Ke Khiladi season 9 that premiered on January 9, 2019.
