Injured Kohli ready to bat - Umesh

Reports that Virat Kohli will not be able to bat in Ranchi are wide of the mark, according to Umesh Yadav.

Umesh Yadav allayed concerns over Virat Kohli's fitness after India made a promising start with the bat on day two of the third Test against Australia in Ranchi.

The India captain suffered a shoulder injury in the afternoon session on day one, keeping him off the field and leading to concerns over his participation in the rest of the four-match series.

Ajinkya Rahane took over the captaincy and also led India to the middle on day two despite a statement revealing there were "no serious concerns" over Kohli's injury.

Seamer Umesh, speaking after India closed on 120-1 in reply to 451 all out, said Kohli will be ready to bat on day three.

"The bandage will obviously be there because if you have a shoulder injury, you need the bandage to hold it together but he is ready to play," Umesh said.

"He has been batting in the nets as well, so obviously he will come back."

Steve Smith made a sublime 178 not out and Glenn Maxwell (104) hit a maiden century, but KL Rahul (67) led the way in India's reply on a day in which Ravindra Jadeja took 5-124.

Umesh, who claimed 3-106, is hopeful that the runs will continue to flow on Saturday.

"On this wicket, it is very difficult to stop singles, 450 has taken them four and a half sessions to get, so on an average [there were] 100 runs per session." he said.

"We also made 120 in one session. On this pitch, it is hard to stem the flow of runs; it isn't as easy to bowl as you might think because the singles will keep coming and the outfield is so quick that once it is in the gap, it will go to the boundary."

He added: "450 is there or thereabouts 20-30 this side or that, but we will try to get to that total."
