IPL 2018: 5 of the most memorable Chennai Super Kings quotes

<p>

The Chennai Super Kings are the most consistent IPL side, having reached the playoffs eight times in eight seasons. They are one of the most successful franchises with two titles as well. CSK have displayed an exceptional brand of cricket over the years and have the largest fan-base among IPL franchises.

Due to the alleged involvement of their owners in betting, they were suspended for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. This year though, they will be making their much-anticipated comeback.

Let us now look at the memorable quotes in the history of the most consistent IPL franchise.

David Hussey on Kings XI Punjab’s plans for MS Dhoni

The Hussey brothers

"We are not going to let him in. We are going to keep my brother in for the whole 20"

David Hussey, who was the stand-in Kings XI Punjab skipper during the 2013 edition of the IPL, had some special plans to tackle the flamboyant CSK skipper, MS Dhoni.

Hussey admitted that the only way to escape Dhoni’s onslaught is by not allowing him to enter the crease.

He wanted his brother and CSK opener, Mike Hussey to stay on till the 20th over so that Dhoni won’t get the chance to come in. Indeed, a masterplan by the Aussie all-rounder.

MS Dhoni after Kings XI Punjab scored 226-6 against CSK

MS Dhoni

"I had belief in my bowling that they will definitely let them score 200 runs"

Chennai Super Kings encountered Kings XI Punjab in the Qualifier-2 game at the Wankhede stadium during the 2014 IPL. Batting first, Punjab scored a mammoth 226-6, courtesy Virender Sehwag’s 122(58).

Chasing 227 for a place in the finals, Raina’s scintillating 87(25) provided a resounding start to Chennai, who scored 100 runs in the powerplay. In the end, CSK fell short of the target by 24 runs.

After the defeat, Dhoni admitted that he was not satisfied with the performance of his bowlers and always believed that they will let Punjab score more than 200.

Stephen Fleming on how CSK dealt with the Dwayne Smith problem

Stephen Fleming

"He hurt us when we played against him so one way to stop him was to buy him and get rid of that headache"

Dwayne Smith tormented the CSK bowlers during a match between the two sides at Wankhede in 2012. Smith continued his form into the next season and was a major headache for the Men in Yellow. The CSK finally bought the West Indian from Mumbai Indians during the 2014 auctions.

When these two sides met at Mumbai in 2014, it was the ‘Smith show’ all the way as his 57(51) guided Chennai to a four-wicket victory. Fleming was elated that the Super Kings had bought Smith, a player who tormented Chennai in the previous two editions, and that the player himself guided them to a comprehensive win against his former franchise.

Albie Morkel on playing in 37-degree Celsius heat

Albie Morkel

"Maybe they must reconsider 4 pm games in Chennai. My word someone will die soon"

The IPL games are played during peak Indian summer when the temperatures soar as high as 45-degree Celsius. Especially, the afternoon games that commence by 4 pm are played in the gruelling summer heat. Most of the overseas players find it difficult to adapt to the humid Indian conditions and easily get dehydrated.

The Proteas all-rounder Albie Morkel had his say on playing the evening games at Chepauk. He urged the IPL governing council to reconsider the match timings and if they're not, someone might even die playing in the hot and humid conditions.

MS Dhoni after Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs against RCB

Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja

"When you give Sir Ravindra Jadeja one ball to get two runs he will win it with one ball to spare"

This match would go down as one of the most thrilling games in the IPL history. Batting first, the RCB scored 165-6 in 20 overs, with fifties from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Chennai’s chase came down to the last over, with the side needing 16 off six. The million-dollar man, Jadeja was on strike for CSK and RCB’s RP Singh bowled the final over.

Jadeja started off the over in the most constructive way, with a four and a six in the first two balls. It all came down to the final delivery, as the equation read two off one. Jadeja edged it to the third man who took an exceptional catch, but unfortunately, it was ruled out as the umpire signalled a no-ball.

The Super Kings took a single and won the match with a ball to spare. Delighted with the win, MS Dhoni was all praise for Jadeja who secured Chennai’s win with a ball to spare even when two runs were needed off the final delivery.
