Chennai Super Kings

In their second match of IPL 2018, KKR scored 202/6 after collapsing to 89/5 at the end of 10 overs. Andre Russel scored 88 off 36 deliveries with the help of 11 sixes, and led KKR to a good total of 203. CSK reached the target in the penultimate delivery of the match and ensured that the Chennai crowd would witness a thriller.

The openers, Shane Watson (42 off 19 balls) and Ambati Rayudu (39 off 26 balls) gave them the perfect start, scoring 75 runs in the powerplay overs.

After a blazing start, Chennai had a period of lull in the middle overs with the spin trio tightening the screws and not allowing Raina and Dhoni to break free. It was Sam Billings who brought them back into the game, scoring 56 runs from just 23 deliveries, hitting two fours and five sixes. Even though Billings got out in the penultimate over, Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja took them home.

With 17 needed off the final over, their task was made a bit easy by Vinay Kumar as he started the over with a no-ball, which Bravo hit for a six. The target effectively came down to 10 runs off 6 balls and Jadeja finished the game by hitting a six on the penultimate delivery of the match, making the final score 205/5.

This is the sixth highest successful run chase in the history of IPL. Here are the top 5:

Maxwell and Miller made a mockery of the target

In this match, CSK were at the receiving end of a high run chase as they had to face the wrath of Maxwell and Miller. For Chennai Super Kings, it was their openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum who scored the bulk of the runs, scoring 66 (43) and 67 (45) respectively.

The two stitched a partnership of 123 runs and were crucial to Chennai's innings. Raina and Dhoni also contributed 24 and 26 runs to the total and helped CSK reach 205.

The Kings XI Punjab lost three batsmen, in Cheteshwar Pujara, Virender Sehwag and Axar Patel, and were at 52-3 in 5.1 overs. That did not deter the duo of Maxwell and Miller, who put on a partnership of 115 from 63 balls; the bulk of the scoring was done by Maxwell who scored 95 runs in 43 balls.

After the fall of Maxwell, Miller was joined by their captain, George Bailey, and the two took the side to a comfortable win with 7 balls to spare.

Ravindra Jadeja finished the match with the last ball boundary

Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 205/8 at the back of three individual performances at the top. Openers Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal scored 68 (35) and 45 (26) respectively, providing them with the perfect start. But it was Virat Kohli's 57 runs which helped them reach the 200 mark, as there was a batting collapse after the fall of Chris Gayle's wicket.

CSK's chase was mainly built around Faf du Plessis' innings in which he scored 71 off 46 deliveries and provided stability to the innings while the other batsmen batted around him.

Raina and Dhoni played useful cameos and helped CSK come close to the target. It seemed as if RCB were running away with the match as CSK needed 43 runs off last two overs. It was Albie Morkel who turned the match around for Chennai.

Coming into bat in the penultimate over, Morkel bludgeoned 28 runs off the first six balls he faced. After losing Morkel on the second ball of the last over, CSK won the match with the help of a last ball boundary by Jadeja.

Rishabh Pant missed out on a hundred

After winning the toss, Delhi Daredevils sent in Gujarat Lions to bat first. Even though GL lost their openers within the first two overs, they were heading towards a huge total thanks to half-centuries by Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik, who scored 77 (43) and 65( 34) respectively.

Gujarat Lions were at 158-4 at the end of 14 overs after losing both the half-centurions. Thanks to some good quality bowling from Kagiso Rabada and Pat Cummins, the Gujarat Lions ended at 208/7 or else the target would have been much higher.

In the chase, DD lost the wicket of their captain Karun Nair in the third over, that is when Rishabh Pant joined Sanju Samson. The Gujarat Lions' campaign ended as a result of Pant's (97 off 43) and Samson's (61 off 31) blitzkriegs.

Both the batsmen have made a mockery of the daunting target and Delhi won the match with 15 balls to spare. Both youngsters could not finish the innings, but their blinders helped DD to an easy win.
