IPL 2019: Players from each team who played in Big Bash VIII

The eighth season of Big Bash ended with Melbourne Renegades lifting the trophy. Aaron Finch showed potential as a captain after a dismal series against India. He would carry his luck forward on his future national team captaincy.

Indian Premier League season 12 starts on 23rd March 2019. Some of the players who played in Big Bash 2018/19 will be playing in IPL 12. Unfortunately, none of the Indian cricketers were permitted to ply their trade in the Men's Big Bash much like earlier seasons.

Big Bash gave some key moments. IPL players expressed their skills ahead of the 2019 edition of the marquee tournament. While an excellent outing in Big Bash does not necessarily imply that the same would happen in IPL, it is still an important statement.

Before the Indian Premier League, it is essential for considering how some players fared in other leagues as well. It would be good to know what these players are capable of. If you are an IPL fan reading this then, you might get to hear what to expect. Let us examine the IPL players from each team and how they performed in Men's Big Bash 2018/19.

Delhi Capitals

Let us begin with the wooden spoon holders. Delhi Capitals had a disappointing IPL 11. They lost 9 out of 14 matches they played and gave their supporters a hard time.

The experienced captain Gautam Gambhir was replaced midway through the tournament by Shreyas Iyer. The inexperienced youngster showed only little promise. There might be a different captain in IPL 12 or else Shreyas need to carry an enormous burden.

Delhi based side bought 10 players in the auction. Two of their cricketers played in BBL VIII.

Colin Ingram (Adelaide Strikers)

Colin Ingram was roped by Delhi Capitals at a price of Rs.6.4 crores at the auction. The South African batsman was an integral part of the Adelaide Strikers' first ever title win in 2017/18 season. He captained the side for 3 matches in that season.

During this Big Bash season, Ingram captained the team more as their regular skipper Travis Head was often on national duty. He scored 333 runs in 13 innings with an average of 30.27 and a strike rate of 138.75. His season-best 75(43) came against Sydney Thunder.

Sandeep Lamichhane (Melbourne Stars)

Sandeep Lamichhane was retained by Delhi Capitals before IPL 12 auctions. He became the first Nepalese cricketer to play in the Big Bash League after being roped in by Melbourne Stars. The young leg spinner had a promising BBL season.

Under Maxwell's captaincy, the 18-year-old played 8 matches. He took 11 wickets with an average of 17.73. Sandeep's best BBL 08 bowling figures (3-11) came against Sydney Sixers. The talented spinner expresses his huge appetite for wickets before IPL 12.

Kings XI Punjab

Kings XI Punjab looked strong on paper but they finished seventh at the 2018 IPL points table. However, we can expect them to turn their fortunes this time around. They have hired Mike Hesson as their head coach for the upcoming season.

The former New Zealand coach was present at the IPL 12 auction. Under his guidance, they made some additions to reinforce the squad. One player from the newcomers and two from the retention list participated in BBL VIII.

Moises Henriques (Sydney Sixers)

Moises Henriques was roped in by Kings XI for Rs 1 crore at the auction. The Australian all-rounder captained Sydney Sixers in BBL VIII. As a captain, Henriques took his team to the semi-finals. His leadership skills would play a key role for Kings XI.

As a batsman, he notched up 289 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 128.44. His high score of 61 in the tournament came against Adelaide Strikers. He just bowled five overs in the tournament and took one wicket. Expect further enhanced performances from him in IPL 12.

Andrew Tye (Perth Scorchers)

Andrew Tye finished as the highest wicket-taker in IPL 11. It is no surprise that he was retained by Kings XI Punjab ahead of the IPL 12 auction.

The Aussie quick played for Perth Scorchers in BBL VIII. He got 17 wickets from 14 games with an average of 22.94 and an economy rate of 8.51. Tye also owns the second-best bowling figure of 4/18 in the season. Expect a carnage in the IPL 12 death overs from Tye.

Mujeeb-Ur-Rahman

It was a surprise when the unseasoned Mujeeb was picked by Kings XI Punjab at IPL 11 auctions. However, the same management retaining him ahead of IPL 12 wasn't.

The best KXIP mystery spinner at the moment represented Brisbane Heat in BBL VIII. He played 12 matches and took 12 wickets with the tournament's best economy rate of 6.04.

Mujeeb also created history with the bat. His 27 runs in the opening match became the highest runs scored by a number 11 batsman in Big Bash.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Much like the earlier seasons, the mighty RCB squad failed to capture the IPL 11 trophy. Despite being a team with no IPL trophies they still remain popular among the fans.

No wonder they will be more desperate to conquer it in 2019 for their supporters. They added nine players in the auction. Interestingly, two of their players who played in the Big Bash were not within the auction buys yet they didn't play for them in 2018.

Nathan Coulter-Nile (Perth Scorchers)

Nathan Coulter-Nile was recruited by RCB in the IPL 11 auctions. Unfortunately, an injury ruled him out for the entire season. Yet the management retained the reliable bowler.

A recovered Coulter-Nile played for Perth Scorchers in BBL VIII. The Aussie pacer took 14 wickets in 13 innings with an average of 27.14 and an economy rate of 7.45.

The veteran's experience with the ball would be vital for RCB. Coulter-Nile seems to be much fitter than the last time and promises to spearhead the Bangalore bowling attack.

Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Renegades)

RCB carried out an exciting move to sign Marcus Stoinis from Kings XI Punjab in exchange of Mandeep Singh. The Aussie all-rounder played 13 fruitful matches for Melbourne Stars.

Stoinis scored 533 runs with an average of 53.30 and a strike rate of 130.64. As a bowler, he took 14 wickets in 11 innings with a bowling average of 16.14 and an economy rate of 8.37.

It is unfortunate that RCB would lose him midway through the tournament due to his National and World Cup commitments. His brief stint should pay rich dividends for them.

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians ended up fifth in the IPL 11 points table. The 2018 edition was a forgettable journey for them. They would look past it and try to show their heroics in 2019.

The three-time IPL champions made some buys in the auction. The players they bought did not find a place in BBL 08. However, two retained players from their previous squad participated in the marquee tournament.

Jason Behrendorff (Perth Scorchers)

Jason Behrendorff was ruled out of IPL 11 due to a back problem. Mitchell McClenaghan replaced him but thanks to Mumbai Indians for retaining the youngster. The Aussie left-arm quick might prove to a vital cog in their setup.

Behrendorff played eleven matches for Perth Scorchers. He scalped up 9 wickets with an economy rate of 6.25 and an average of 28.00. He holds the fourth best economy rate in BBL VIII. Mumbai Indians has all reasons to hope that he would be their talisman.

Ben Cutting (Brisbane Heat)

Ben Cutting was pivotal as an all-rounder for Brisbane Heat. He played 14 games for them. Cutting scored 249 runs with an average of 24.90 and a strike rate of 153.70.

The Cutting Edge Aussie created history by scoring the second fastest half-century (17 deliveries) in Big Bash history. He scored 81 runs as an opener in that match against Melbourne Stars. He also took 12 crucial wickets with the ball in BBL VIII.

Mumbai Indians fans would be praying that Cutting stays with them throughout IPL 12.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals finished fourth at the IPL 11 points table. The absence of Steve Smith and the departure of the in-form opener Jos Butler hurt them in the end. Nevertheless, they would be looking to do better in IPL 12.

The team bought nine players and enhanced their squad in the December auction. One newcomer played BBL VIII. The remaining two are from their retention list.

Ashton Turner (Perth Scorchers)

Ashton Turner was bought for Rs 50 lakhs in the IPL 12 auction. 2019 IPL will be the first season for the Perth Scorchers batting all-rounder. During his 14 matches in BBL 08, he scored 378 runs with an average of 31.50 and a strike rate of 132.63.

Turner was restrained from bowling in the tournament due to his shoulder injury. He cannot be expected to bowl in IPL 12. However, he can be handy as a batsman for RR.

Jos Butler (Sydney Thunder)

Jos Butler played only seven matches for Sydney Thunder due to his national commitments. Nonetheless, he made brilliant use of his limited opportunities and proved his class.

The swashbuckling batsman notched up 273 runs with an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of 135.15. His highest score in the season was 89. Butler will be brimming with confidence and play a major role for Rajasthan Royals before departing for World Cup practice.

Jofra Archer (Hobart Hurricanes)

Rajasthan Royals retained Jofra Archer as he proved his worth in IPL 11 by taking 15 wickets in just 10 games. He had a memorable outing in the 2018/19 Big Bash season.

The 23-year-old played 15 matches for Hobart Hurricanes and took 18 wickets with an average of 23.50 and an economy rate of 7.53. His batting was limited to just three innings. Expect a string of superb bowling performances from Archer in IPL 12.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders had a good IPL 11. They finished third in the points table. The captain Dinesh Karthik displayed good captaincy skills. They might win IPL 12 finals if luck would favour them. The brave young talents certainly deserve an IPL victory.

The team added eight players to their side ahead of IPL 12. Two of them played in BBL 8 and one player from their retention list showed his talent in the tournament.

Harry Gurney (Melbourne Renegades)

KKR bought the unfamiliar Harry Gurney for a price of Rs 75 lakhs. Their fans need to be aware that this untested IPL commodity is an experienced domestic cricketer in England.

The left arm fast bowler was signed by Melbourne Renegades as a replacement player for Usman Khan Shinwari. Gurney repaid the management's trust by helping them win the finals.

The talisman played 9 matches for Melbourne Renegades and took ten wickets with an average of 24.40 and an economy rate of 7.18. Kolkata is a fitting IPL home for him.

Joe Denly (Sydney Sixers)

KKR invested Rs 1 crore on Joe Denly in the IPL 12 auction. He played just seven matches for Sydney Sixers and scored 137 runs with an average of 22.83 and a strike rate of 103.01.

Denly is a player capable of doing much more. He is a seasoned campaigner and has more than five thousand T20 runs under his belt. He can be a suitable replacement opener if Chris Lynn leaves due to World Cup training. The veteran adds experience to the young squad.

Chris Lynn (Brisbane Heat)

Chris Lynn was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders for his explosiveness with the bat.

The Brisbane Heat captain was in a swashbuckling form in Big Bash VIII. He notched up 385 runs in 13 innings with an average of 35.00 and a strike rate of 126.23. Lynn ended his BBL season as the top run-getter for Brisbane Heat.

Kolkata Knight Riders might get lucky if he is not picked up in the World Cup playing XI. The chances are slim but given the National re-entry of Smith and Warner, it is possible.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Orange Army was exceptional during IPL 11. They made it to the finals before unfortunately losing to Chennai Super Kings. Kane Williamson displayed brilliant leadership abilities. The team fared well despite David Warner's absence.

They made few buys in the IPL 12 auction. Three players from the Hyderabad based team got placed in BBL 8. All of them played in IPL 11 for the Sunrisers.

Mohammad Nabi (Melbourne Renegades)

The first Afghan player to be picked up in the IPL, Mohammad Nabi was retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad before the auctions. He played a prominent role for the champion side Melbourne Renegades. The former Afghan captain played 14 matches for them.

Nabi scored 228 runs from 13 innings with an average of 22.80 and a strike rate of 113.43. With the ball, he was decent as he scalped up 8 wickets in 31.0 overs.

Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers)

Rashid Khan was extremely useful for Adelaide Strikers in BBL VIII. The young leg spinner took 19 wickets in 14 innings with an average of 18.11 and an economy rate of 6.14. Rashid was the third best economical bowler in the whole season.

He was quite useful with the bat as well. He faced a total of 56 balls and scored 93 runs with a strike rate of 166.07. Sunrisers Hyderabad has a decent all-rounder in Rashid Khan.

Billy Stanlake (Adelaide Strikers)

Sunrisers Hyderabad saw Billy Stanlake as worth retaining ahead of IPL 12. He was ruled out midway through the tournament in 2018 due to an injury but had a decent stint.

Billy Stanlake played 11 matches for Adelaide Strikers and collected 11 wickets. His bowling average was 32.18 and economy rate was 9.08. Stanlake may depart midway due to World Cup preparation but he can lend some neat performances in the matches he plays for SRH.

Chennai Super Kings

Let us now have a look at the defending champions Chennai Super Kings. Three CSK players played in Big Bash 8. Chennai has mostly experienced players in their squad above 30 years of age. They added a wealth of experience which benefited the team in IPL 11.

These players gave stellar performances together in Chennai team. However, the yellow lions did not get to represent one single pride in BBL.

David Willey (Perth Scorchers)

Chennai Super Kings are known to be a team that retains most of their players. However, when it came down to Mark Wood or David Willey they chose the latter.

David Willey did not have a noteworthy BBL VIII. The England all-rounder played just 7 games for Perth Scorchers. He faced just 44 balls in the tournament and scored 29 runs. His bowling too was limited. Willey bowled a total of 13 overs and took 2 wickets.

With enough opportunities and trust from the management, Willey can become a sensation in India. All he needs is some time to get accustomed to Indian conditions. Nevertheless, even if he is in a top form it will be short-lived as he might be called up for World Cup preparation.

Dwayne Bravo (Melbourne Stars)

Dwayne Bravo played for Melbourne Stars in BBL VIII. The former West Indies captain was a bit useful. He batted 12 innings and scored 145 runs with an average of 14.50 and a strike rate of 122.88.

His bowling was better as he took 15 wickets in 15 innings with an economy rate of 7.97. Bravo might show signs of slowing down but there is no denying the fact that his team Melbourne Stars reached the finals of BBL VIII.

Shane Watson (Sydney Thunder)

Shane Watson was not who he used to be. He showed some signs of ageing but still was a class act. The veteran all-rounder did not a bowl a single over throughout the tournament.

Watson notched up 344 runs in 14 innings with an average of 26.46 and a strike rate of 129.81. He scored a century against Brisbane Heat but still as a captain failed to get his team through to the finals.

Chennai fans cannot expect good bowling performances from Watson, but they can at least expect a century and some vital knocks.
