Kane Williamson could be perfect addition for Kolkata Knight Riders

Williamson would be the ideal replacement for Gautam Gambhir as skipper

What's the story?

With Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) deciding against retaining Gautam Gambhir, they will be on the lookout for a top-order batsman who can double up as an inspirational skipper. Considering the tracks that they usually play on and his track record, Kane Williamson could be the perfect addition to the KKR side ahead of IPL 2018.

While Williamson is not the first name that springs to mind when you think of T20 batsmen, he has an impressive record in the format. His addition would also solve the problem of who captains the side as they look to claim their third IPL title. An average of almost 35 in T20Is speaks about how effective the 27-year-old is even if he is overshadowed by his more exhilarating counterparts.

In case you didn't know...

The New Zealand captain was part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2017. Although he only played seven matches, he averaged 42 and had a strike rate in excess of 150 with two fifties to his name. Overall, his 15 IPL matches has seen score at an average of over 30 with three fifties to his name.

The heart of the matter

With KKR deciding to retain Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, it looks as though they are ready to write a new chapter in the franchise' history. They are on the lookout for a top-order batsman and currently without a captain as well, Williamson perfectly fits the bill. He can be the anchor that affords the rest of the batsmen to just go out and express themselves.

The fact that he is no mug with the bat either means that he will be among the runs on a consistent basis. The 27-year-old is also excellent in conditions that assist the bowlers and given the Eden Gardens tendency to help the bowlers a bit more in recent years, his solid technique will come in handy.

What’s next?

Currently taking part in the ODI series against Pakistan, Williamson will be looking to rack up the runs ahead of the IPL Auction that will take place in Bengaluru on January 27.

Author’s take

Whether it is on seaming or spinning conditions, Kane Williamson has the technique to counter any bowling attack. While the IPL has always been about hitting big, there needs to be a method to the madness and Williamson will bring the perfect blend of class and the ability to innovate and score quickly.

As KKR look to lift their third IPL title, it might not be a bad idea to get in Williamson, especially considering the fact that SRH are unlikely to use the RTM card on him, with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Rashid Khan above him in the pecking order.
