Several big names of international cricket have put their names in the auction pool for IPL 2020. While the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Aaron Finch, who withdrew their names from the previous auction, will be back in the auction, IPL stars like Chris Lynn, Dale Steyn and Robin Uthappa, who were released by their respective franchises have also put their names in the fray.

All these players have kept their base prices quite high and are expected to be top picks at the auction. Along with these players, there are some other players who have kept their base price between ₹1.5 to ₹2 crores. Most of the teams have limited slots to be filled in, with a limited purse available, which means it is highly unlikely that the teams will spend extravagantly on any player.

Moreover, some of these 'high base price' players haven't really done justice to their reputation in the IPL in the past which might make things difficult for them at the auction table.

Here are 5 players with high base prices who might go unsold at the auction.

#5 Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood

Josh Hazlewood has been the backbone of Australia's Test squad for a long time now. Hazlewood has been relentless with his line and length and has been a match-winner for the Aussies. Unfortunately, in order to keep him injury-free, Hazlewood has often been kept out of the limited-overs sides.

While the right-arm quick has played as many as 50 Tests, he has been part of just 44 ODIs. More importantly, he has played just 7 international T20s in his entire career. Due to international commitments, the 28-year-old hasn't played much of franchise T20 cricket and has no IPL experience.

Considering his lack of experience of playing T20 cricket, Hazlewood might find no buyers at the auction.

#4 Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh's career has been a topsy-turvy affair. The all-rounder was once considered to be the future of Australian cricket and on good account. Marsh lead the Australian U-19 side to the World Cup title and was then making waves in domestic cricket.

But unfortunately, Marsh hasn't been able to perform as per his potential and has been in and out of the Australian side.

Talking about his IPL career, Marsh was first drafted in the IPL in 2010 when he was bought by Deccan Chargers. He then went on to play for Pune Warriors India from 2011 to 2014. Marsh later played for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016 and 2017.

His IPL stats are far from impressive. In 20 games, the 28-year-old has scored just 225 runs at an average of 18.75. He has fared better with the ball, taking 20 wickets in as many games but much more is required from an international all-rounder. Owing to his indifferent IPL record, Marsh is likely to remain unsold.

#3 David Willey

David Willey

David Willey is considered to be perfect T20 material. He swings the new ball and provides a wicket-taking option, while with the bat, he can bat at any position in the batting order and tonk the ball into the stands.

Keeping in mind all these attributes, the Chennai Super Kings picked Willey as a replacement to the injured Kedar Jadhav in IPL 2018. The Englishman was brought into the playing XI after a couple of matches to bolster the team's bowling attack.

However, Willey did not look at his best as he went for quite a few runs in the three games that he played. The 29-year-old took just two wickets in three games while giving away runs at an economy of 9.50 runs per over.

Despite his below-par performance, Willey was retained by CSK the next year but he pulled out due to family reasons. Willey was released by the Super Kings and might not get any bidders at the auction.

#2 Angelo Mathews

Angelo Mathews is one of those players who has time and again flattered to deceive in the IPL. There is no doubting Mathews' class and talent but for some reason, he just hasn't been able to click in the IPL.

While after a promising start his international career too has been hot and cold of late, his IPL career has been extremely disappointing. The former Sri Lankan skipper has played for the Kolkata Knight Riders, Pune Warriors India and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).

In the 49 IPL games that he has played so far, Mathews has scored 724 runs at an average of 23.35 and has picked up 27 scalps at an average of 39.96. The Sri Lankan has failed to perform at crucial junctures of the game especially while playing for his last franchise Delhi Daredevils.

Also, the thing that might go against Mathews is the fact that he doesn't bowl that often now, which pretty much makes him a one-dimensional player.

#1 Shaun Marsh

Shaun Marsh announced himself on the big stage by playing some breathtaking innings in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008. Marsh, an unknown quantity at that time, ended up as the highest run-getter of the season and was subsequently picked for his national side.

Unfortunately, Marsh's international career never took off but he still remained a force to reckon with in the IPL. He did miss quite some matches due to injuries but still maintained a strong IPL record.

Marsh has an IPL career average of 39.95 and in fact had an average of over 30 in IPL 2018, the last season he played in the IPL.

After playing for Kings XI Punjab for 10 years, he was released by the team before IPL 2018. Despite his superlative IPL record, Marsh failed to attract any buyers and remained unsold at the next two auctions. Considering that Shaun Marsh is 36, in all likelihood, he will remain unsold once again.
