The IPL Auction 2020 is just under three weeks away as all the teams would have laid down their respective plans for the event. The franchises do not wish to spend much in the auction but the value of some exceptional players forces the teams to enter into a bidding war. Over the years, the fans have witnessed several bidding wars in the auction where the teams forget the smart budgeting techniques and give it all they have to sign one player.

While the top retained players always receive better contracts than the players signed in the auction, there have been multiple instances where teams made their most expensive signing in the auction. The trade pundits bill ₹10 crore as a major milestone in the IPL auction and during the last 13 auctions, only nine players have surpassed that milestone.

Here's a look at all the nine stars who fetched over ₹10 crore rupees in the IPL Auction -

#1 Gautam Gambhir - ₹11.04 crore

The first player to get a ₹10 crore plus bid at the IPL auction was the former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir. The Delhi-born superstar entered the auction in 2011 after Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) released him. A lot of teams wanted him in their side not only because of his phenomenal batting skills but Gautam was also a fantastic leader.

Kolkata Knight Riders splurged ₹11.04 crore rupees from their purse to sign the left-handed batsman. The bold decision paid off for KKR as Gambhir guided them to the IPL title in 2012 and 2014. Besides, he was one of the highest run-scorers of the franchise.

Though he never scored a hundred for Kolkata, he registered 27 fifties in the IPL while donning the purple and gold jersey.

#2 Ravindra Jadeja - ₹12 crore

The Indian all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja entered the IPL Auction for the third consecutive year in 2012. Rajasthan Royals released him in 2010 while his next franchise, Kochi Tuskers Kerala left the IPL before 2012. While he had not received a huge bid on the earlier two occasions, Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers wanted Jadeja in their squad at any cost.

Ultimately, Chennai Super Kings won the bidding war and signed the Saurashtra-born all-rounder for a massive fee of ₹12 crore rupees. He still is a part of the same franchise which indicates his consistency in the league. Jadeja has been economical with the ball whereas he has also chipped in with some match-winning knocks in the batting department.

#3 Yuvraj Singh - ₹14 crore and ₹16 crore

Another Indian all-rounder to be a part of this elite club is the 2011 World Cup hero, Yuvraj Singh. After playing for Kings XI Punjab and Pune Warriors India, Yuvraj entered the auction in 2014. Almost all the teams had submitted a bid for him but Royal Challengers won the race with an unbelievable bid of ₹14 crore. However, Singh could not live up to expectations as he scored 376 runs and took 5 wickets in 14 matches.

RCB released him before the next season only for the Delhi Daredevils to sign him at a record-breaking price of ₹16 crore. The Bangalore-based franchise competed with Delhi till the end but, Delhi grabbed him finally.

Unfortunately, the all-rounder could not play up to the mark in 2015 as he had aggregated 236 runs and taken 1 wicket for Delhi. Yuvraj retired from IPL earlier this year.

#4 Dinesh Karthik - ₹12.5 crore and ₹10.5 crore

Indian wicket-keeper batsman, Dinesh Karthik finished as the second most expensive player of IPL Auction in 2014 and 2015. Delhi Daredevils broke the bank in 2014 to bring Karthik in their squad by spending ₹12.50 crores. The Tamil Nadu-based wicket-keeper batsman had a decent outing in IPL 2014 as he scored 325 runs in 14 matches.

DD released him before 2015 and then Royal Challengers Bangalore submitted a bid of ₹10.50 crores to gain his services. However, Karthik could only score 141 runs for RCB in 16 IPL matches. His average was 12.81 while his highest score was 28. Thus, RCB ended its association with him. Currently, Karthik is the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders.

#5 Ben Stokes - ₹14.5 crore and ₹12.5 crore

English all-rounder, Ben Stokes is the only overseas player to have fetched over 10 crores rupees in two IPL Auction. Rising Pune Supergiants spent ₹14.5 crores to get the Englishman in their squad for the 2017 season. The all-rounder shone for Pune as he scored 316 runs and took 12 wickets in 12 matches. Pune reached the final of IPL 2017.

But, after Pune left IPL, Stokes found himself in the auction once again. All the franchises wanted to outbid each other for his services and eventually, Rajasthan Royals signed him for a price of ₹12.5 crores. Though the fast bowling all-rounder has not repeated his 2017 performance, Rajasthan Royals have not lost their faith in him.

#6 Tymal Mills - ₹12 crore

English fast bowler, Tymal Mills had grabbed the world’s attention with his fantastic bowling performances against India. Since India and England had played a T20I series just before the IPL auction in 2017, the interest level to sign Mills was sky high. Royal Challengers Bangalore desperately needed a quality overseas pacer as Mitchell Starc had opted out of the tournament. Therefore, they paid ₹12 crore to get Mills’ services.

Though the fans expected him to be the face of RCB’s bowling attack, he featured in only 5 matches. The left-arm pacer scalped 6 wickets while conceding runs at a decent economy rate of 8.57. His best figures were 2/31, but the franchise released him from their squad ahead of IPL 2018.

#7 Jaydev Unadkat - ₹11.5 crore

Jaydev Unadkat has been one of the biggest names in the Indian domestic circuit. The left-arm fast bowler has been a regular for Saurashtra while he has played a few international games for India. Unadkat's career reached its peak in IPL 2017 when he played for Rising Pune Supergiant.

The left-arm seam bowler defied the opposition batsmen with his variations and ended the season as one of the top bowlers. Next year, Pune left the tournament and Rajasthan Royals spent a mammoth ₹11.4 crore to grab him. As he was not so effective in IPL 2018, Rajasthan released him from the team.

They once again bought him in the auction albeit at a lower price but, Unadkat's disappointing campaign in IPL 2019 has led to his exit from the team.

#8 KL Rahul - ₹11 crore

The only player for whom Kings XI Punjab has spent over ₹10 crore rupees in the IPL Auction is Karnataka's right-handed batsman, KL Rahul. The Indian opener had played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier but his career reached new highs once he moved to Kings XI Punjab.

In the two seasons Rahul has played for the Mohali-based franchise, he has aggregated 1,252 runs. He owns the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian in IPL whereas he even registered his maiden IPL ton in the last season. The fans expect him to captain Kings XI Punjab in 2020.

#9 Manish Pandey - ₹11 rore

Another right-handed batsman from Karnataka to feature in this list is Manish Pandey. Sunrisers Hyderabad had entered into an intense bidding war with Kings XI Punjab to sign Pandey and eventually, they beat Punjab with a mega bid of ₹11 crore. Pandey did not impress much in his debut season for Sunrisers but, he played a lot of match-winning knocks for the 2016 champions in IPL 2019.

Pandey will don the orange jersey once again in 2020 and the fans will hope that he continues his fine form from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019-20.
