The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League or IPL 2020 is all set to get underway on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The IPL Governing Council is likely to finalise the complete schedule for the tournament by the first week of February.

The auction for the 2020 IPL edition took place at Kolkata on December 19. Australian paceman Pat Cummins was the most expensive player, purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 15.5 crores. Leggie Piyush Chawla was the most expensive Indian player - bought by Chennai Super Kings for INR 6.75 crores. Among batsmen, Australian big-hitter Glenn Maxwell was sold to his former franchise Kings XI Punjab for INR 10.75 crores.

Every year, the batsman with most number of runs in the edition is declared the winner of the Orange Cap. As the teams prepare for IPL 2020, we take a look at the winners from each season.


Shaun Marsh

2008 | 616 runs by Shaun Marsh (Kings XI Punjab)

Australian left-hander Shaun Marsh made a significant impact on the inaugural IPL edition, amassing 616 runs in 11 matches for Kings XI Punjab. Marsh’s runs came at a strike rate of 139.68 and an average of 68.44. The performance featured one hundred and five fifties. Marsh’s best of 115 came off 69 balls against Rajasthan Royals at Mohali in the 56 match of the edition. Punjab won the game by 41 runs. They, however, lost the semi-finals to Chennai Super Kings in which Marsh contributed 23 from 17.


Matthew Hayden

2009 | 572 runs by Matthew Hayden (Chennai Super Kings)

Another Aussie, Matthew Hayden, dominated the 2009 edition with the bat. Turning out for Chennai Super Kings, Hayden smashed 572 runs in 12 matches at a strike rate of 144.81 and an average of 52. Hayden hit five fifties in the season. The left-hander’s highest score of 89 came off 58 balls against Kings XI Punjab in the 34th match of the edition at Centurion. CSK won the game by 12 runs. Chennai ended up losing in the semi-final to Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets in which Hayden’s contribution was 26 from 19 balls.

Sachin Tendulkar

2010 | 618 runs by Sachin Tendulkar (Mumbai Indians)

The legendary Sachin Tendulkar was the top run-getter in the 2010 edition. He played 15 matches and scored 618 runs at a strike rate of 132.61 and an average of 47.53. Tendulkar slammed five half-centuries in the season. The MI skipper’s best of 89 not out came from 59 deliveries against Rajasthan Royals in the 45th match played at Jaipur. Mumbai emerged victorious in the match by 37 runs. MI made it to the final, but ended up losing to CSK by 22 runs. Tendulkar top-scored with 48. However, Mumbai faltered in a chase of 169.


Chris Gayle

2011 | 608 runs by Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

The maverick Chris Gayle was the leading run-scorer in 2011 with 608 runs from 12 matches. The left-hander’s runs came at a brilliant strike rate of 183.13 and an average of 67.55. He had two hundreds and three fifties to show for his efforts. Gayle’s best of 107 came off only 49 balls in the 47th match of the edition against Kings XI Punjab at Bengaluru. Gayle smashed nine sixes apart from ten fours as RCB won by a massive 85 runs.

Gayle’s other hundred in the season came against Kolkata Knight Riders in the 24th match at Eden Gardens. The southpaw dashed his way to an unbeaten 102 off 55 balls with seven sixes as RCB chased 172 to win by nine wickets. RCB, however, ended up losing the final to CSK. Gayle was out for a third-ball duck as RCB crumbled in a chase of 206, and lost by 58 runs.


Chris Gayle

2012 | 733 runs by Chris Gayle (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

In 2012, Chris Gayle won the Orange Cap for the second year in a row. He plundered 733 runs in 15 games at an average of 61.08 and a brilliant strike rate of 160.74. Gayle ended up hitting seven fifties and one century in the season. His best of 128 not out was scored against Delhi Daredevils in the 67th match played at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium. The West Indian blasted 13 sixes while plundering 128 off 62 balls. RCB posted 215 for 1 batting first and won the contest by 21 runs. Despite Gayle’s brilliance, RCB finished fifth and did not make it to the play-offs.

Michael Hussey

2013 | 733 runs by Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings)

Playing for Chennai Super Kings in 2013, Aussie Mike Hussey accumulated 733 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 129.50 and an average of 52.35. The left-hander smashed six fifties in the event. His highest score of 95 from 59 balls came against KKR in the 38th match at Chennai. Thanks to Hussey’s knock, CSK posted 200 for 3 batting first and ended up winning the contest by 14 runs. He ran out Manvinder Bisla for 92 to make another important contribution. CSK ended up runners-up, losing the final to Mumbai Indians by 23 runs. Hussey was bowled by Lasith Malinga for 1 as CSK failed to chase 149.


Robin Uthappa

2014 | 660 runs by Robin Uthappa (Kolkata Knight Riders)

The aggressive Robin Uthappa amassed 660 runs turning out for KKR in the 2014 edition. He got the runs in 16 matches at a strike rate of 137.78 and at an average of 44. Uthappa scored five half-centuries in the season. His highest in 2014 was the unbeaten 83 off 51 balls against RCB at Kolkata. Batting first, his innings took KKR to 195 for 4. KKR easily won the contest by 30 runs as Sunil Narine picked up 4 for 20. Uthappa’s efforts were in a winning cause as KKR won the final, defeating KXIP by three wickets. While Uthappa managed only five in the final, Manish Pandey’s 50-ball 94 sealed the title for Kolkata Knight Riders, as they chased down 200.


David Warner

2015 | 562 runs by David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Skipper David Warner led from the front for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015. In 14 games, he blasted 562 runs at a strike rate of 156.54 and an average of 43.23. Warner had seven fifties to show for his efforts. The southpaw’s best of 91 came against KKR in the 19th match at Visakhapatnam. His whirlwind knock came off 55 balls and featured four sixes. Sunrisers won the match by 16 runs by the D/L method. However, despite Warner's Orange Cap, Sunrisers did not make it to the playoffs. They were sixth at the end of the league stage with seven wins from 14 matches.

Virat Kohli

2016 | 973 runs by Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

RCB skipper Virat Kohli amassed an unbelievable 973 runs in the 2016 edition. Kohli got the runs from 16 matches at an strike rate of 152.03 and an average of 81.08. He slammed seven fifties and as many as four hundreds. Kohli’s best of 113 came against KXIP at Bengaluru in match number 50. Kohli's dazzling knock came off 50 balls and featured eight sixes. RCB posted 211 for 3 batting first and won by 82 runs. Kohli scored 100 not out off 63 balls in a losing cause against Gujarat Lions.

His other tons were 108 not out from 58 balls against Rising Pune Supergiant and 109 from 55 deliveries versus Gujarat Lions again, this time in a victory. RCB made it to the final against SRH, but failed to chase down 209 despite Gayle’s 76 from 38 and Kohli’s 35-ball 54.

2017 | 641 runs by David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Warner again led from the front for SRH. This time, he smashed 641 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 141.81 and an average of 58.27. The left-hander hit one hundred and four fifties in the edition. Warner’s best of 126 came off only 59 deliveries against KKR in the 37th match at Hyderabad. The innings featured eight hits over the fence. SRH posted 209 for 3 and won the contest by 48 runs. Sunrisers made it to the eliminator but were knocked out by KKR in a rain-hit encounter. Warner struggled, making 37 from 35. Kolkata easily won chasing a revised target of 48 in six overs.


Kane Williamson

2018 | 735 runs by Kane Williamson (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson proved he can be a match-winner in the T20 version as well with 735 runs from 17 games in the 2018 edition. Williamson scored his runs at an impressive strike rate of 142.44 and an average of 52.50. Williamson hit as many as eight fifties in the season. His best of 84 from 51 was a brilliant knock, but came in a losing cause against CSK in the 20th match of IPL 2018. Leading the side, Williamson hit five sixes and as many fours, but SRH fell tantalisingly short by four runs in a chase of 183. Hyderabad made it to the final of the tournament, but went down to CSK by eight wickets. Williamson made 47 from 36. However, Shane Watson’s unbeaten 117 from 57 led CSK in the chase of 179.


David Warner

2019 | 692 runs by David Warner (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

For the third time in the IPL, Warner won the Orange Cap. He was in smashing form in 2019 again with 692 runs in 12 games at a strike rate of 143.86 and an average of 69.20. Warner slammed one hundred and eight fifties in the edition, and formed a splendid partnership with Jonny Bairstow at the top of the order, featuring in a record three consecutive hundred-run stands.

The third century partnership saw Warner post his highest of 100 not out against RCB at Hyderabad in game number 11. Warner blazed away in his 55-ball knock, thwacking five sixes and five fours while Bairstow made 114 from 56. The pair put on a record 185 for the first wicket as Sunrisers won by a mammoth 118 runs against a desolate RCB. Warner and Bairstow-less SRH, however, went down to Delhi Capitals in the eliminator, as Sunrisers failed to defend 163 in a thrilling finish.
