IPL history: Two players who got out on 99

An IPL century isn't something one witnesses everyday. Among the hundreds of players who have played IPL, only a small percentage have gone on to score a century. Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and Shane Watson are the top centurions in the IPL history.

Even though there have been 55 centuries scored by players, there have been only two players who got out on 99 since the inception of the league. Let us look at those two instances where they got strangled on the nervous number.

#1 King Kohli run out on 99 against Delhi Daredevils

During the 2013 edition of IPL, when the Royal Challengers Bangalore played Delhi Daredevils, Virat Kohli got run-out on 99 on the last ball of the innings. Batting first, RCB scored 183 from 20 overs with their captain leading them from the front.

He started his innings cautiously as RCB lost both the openers within the first power play. Kohli made a 50-run partnership with Moises Henriques which steadied the innings for RCB. Later, AB de Villiers replaced Henriques and the duo started shifting gears by the latter part of the innings.

They amassed 47 runs off the last 2 overs of Umesh Yadav. By the end of the 19th over, Kohli was batting on 76. The last over saw him scoring 2-4-4-6-6 from the first five balls. While trying to sneak a double in the last ball, he fell short of the crease and a much deserving ton by 1 run.

#2 The Great Prithvi 'Show' ended agonisingly on 99 against KKR

When the Delhi Capitals played against the Kolkata Knight Riders in this season of the IPL, young Prithvi Shaw got dismissed on 99 after a spectacular batting display. KKR scored 185 runs from 20 overs after coming out to bat first, thanks to some last-over carnage by Andre Russel (62 off 28 balls), and Dinesh Karthik (50 off 36 balls).

Chasing 186, Prithvi Shaw was in immaculate form right from the first ball. He smashed the KKR bowlers all around the park. Completing his 50 off 30 balls, he punished both spinners and pacers with equal aggression.

During the 19th over, when he mis-hit a pull off Lockie Ferguson, he was caught by Karthik on 99. His 55-ball 99 made sure that Delhi Capitals were in a comfortable position to win the game. But, an exceptional last over from Kuldeep Yadav concluded the DC innings on 185 and made way for a super over.

In the super over, Kagiso Rabada bowled some fine-quality yorkers, and defended 10 runs to win the match for Delhi Capitals.

Shaw missed the milestone of becoming the youngest-ever centurion in IPL history.
