Murali Vijay opens up about his admiration for Yuvraj Singh
The 33-year-old opener also revealed AB de Villiers, Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla are among the batsmen he admires.
What's the story?
Indian opener Murali Vijay admitted that he is a huge fan of Yuvraj Singh. The 33-year-old added that he admires India's current top five and their ability to build partnerships despite their different approach to the game but reserved special praise for the all-rounder from Punjab.
Speaking to DNA, Vijay said: "I have always been great Yuvraj Singh fan. When I started playing cricket, he was 22 or 23. I was always fascinated by his talent, the way he strikes the ball. I am still a Yuvi admirer and will always be for the way he really plays his game."
The right-hander from Tamil Nadu also said he liked the way AB de Villiers "approaches the game" and added two of his compatriots, Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla in the list of cricketers he admires.
In case you didn't know...
Murali Vijay made his India debut in 2008, a year after Yuvraj Singh helped India claim the maiden World T20 and a whole eight years after the southpaw made his international debut, in an ODI against Kenya. Before Vijay played his first Test, Yuvraj had already represented India across all three formats and was a regular in the limited-overs side despite just being a couple of years older than Vijay.
The heart of the matter
A veteran of over 400 international matches for India, Yuvraj Singh will go down as not only one of India's most successful players but also one of the most elegant as well. The effortless ease with which he smashes sixes is a joy to behold and Vijay is just another in a long list of admirers that the southpaw has.
After coming back to form and full fitness during the ongoing edition of the Ranji Trophy, the 33-year-old's next assignment will be the three-match Test series against Sri Lanka that begins on Thursday (November 16). Following that India will embark on the first of their away trips in 2018 with a tour to South Africa in January before travelling to England in July and Australia at the end of 2018.
In full flow, Murali Vijay is one of the most elegant batsmen in the current Test side and his admiration for another elegant batsman, Yuvraj Singh, is evident in his words. While the pair may not have played a lot together and might never play together again, the opener's admiration for the southpaw remains undiminished.
