The iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hosted two Maharaja Trophy 2024 matches on Monday, August 19. Defending champions Hubli Tigers outclassed Bengaluru Blasters in the first match, while Mysuru Warriors prevailed over Mangalore Dragons later in the evening.
The defeat marked Bengaluru Blasters’ first of the season after winning three games in a row. Regardless, the Blasters still sit atop the Maharaja Trophy 2024 points table with six points from four matches. Hubli Tigers extended their unbeaten run to three matches to take the second spot on the six-team standings. Also holding six points, the Hubli Tigers’ net run rate (NRR) of 0.939 falls short of the Blasters.
Mysuru Warriors swapped places with Mangalore Dragons to climb to number three on the table after securing a huge win in Bengaluru. Gulbarga Mystics occupy the fifth position on the charts with two points from three games and a dismal NRR of -1.592.
Yet to register a single win this season, struggling Shivamogga Lions continue to languish at the bottom of the table with three defeats in three attempts.
Karun Nair bashes 124* to light up Maharaja Trophy double-header
In match number nine of the Maharaja Trophy 2024 season, Bengaluru Blasters were folded up for just 142 owing to the collective brilliance of Vidwath Kaverappa (3/23) and Manvanth Kumar (3/38). For the Blasters, middle-order batter Shubhang Hegde (52) and opener LR Chethan (48) compounded 100 of those runs together as they received little assistance from the rest of their batting colleagues.
In response, Hubli Tigers opener Thippa Reddy and number three Krishnan Shrijith walloped identical 40s at the top to overcome the early dismissal of Mohammad Taha. Overpowering Kranthi Kumar’s fighting three-fer, unbeaten Aneeshwar Gautam (14*) and Manvanth Kumar (10*) chased down their target with five wickets and seven balls to spare.
Between Mysuru Warriors and Mangalore Dragons, the former amassed 226/4 from 20 overs largely owing to an authoritative 124* from captain Karun Nair. The senior Warriors batter faced just 48 deliveries in the process and smeared 13 of those for boundaries and another nine for sixes. Manoj Bhandage also belted 31* from 14 balls to fuel the Warriors’ boundary barrage in the death overs.
Chasing 227 in 20 overs before rains enforced a revised target, Mangalore Dragons made just 138/7 from 14 overs to fall 27 runs (DLS method) short of their task.
Wicketkeeper-batter Krishnamurthy Siddharth slogged nine boundaries and a six to produce 50 runs off 27 balls. However, he failed to keep up with the asking rate against the might of Mysuru Warriors bowlers Jagadeesha Suchith (2/16) and Codanda Ajit Karthik (2/27).
