Martin Guptill’s 30-ball 93 helped New Zealand hunt down Sri Lanka’s target of 118 in just 8.2 overs and take a 2-0 lead in the ODI series after the second ODI at Christchurch on Monday.
Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 117 thanks to a four-wicket haul from Matt Henry were comprehensively beaten, despite Brendon McCullum not opening the innings.
Here are a few records that were smashed in the process.
1 – Martin Guptill is the fastest New Zealander to complete his half-century, beating Brendon McCullum’s 18-ball innings against England in the World Cup. Only one batsman has got to his ODI fifty faster than Guptill, which was achieved by AB de Villiers’s 16-ball effort against West Indies earlier in the year.
3 – The number of times the Kiwis have won an ODI with 250 or more balls to spare. Three other countries have achieved that feat – Sri Lanka (twice), Australia and England (once).
4 – This was Henry’s fifth five-wicket haul in ODIs. All five of his four-wicket hauls in ODIs have come against Asian teams. He has done it twice against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and once against India on debut. In 8 matches, he has taken 27 wickets against those three, while he has picked up just nine in nine matches against the other teams.
5 – Sri Lanka have been bowled out for less than 200 in ODIs, five times in 2015. On three of those occasions, the opponents were the Kiwis, with the other two being against South Africa and Pakistan.
14.16 – New Zealand's run rate is the second-highest in a completed ODI innings. The best (15.83) was also by the Kiwis, which was against Bangladesh in 2007. In fact, the four best run rates in an ODI innings have all been by the Kiwis.
16 – New Zealand reached their 50 off just 16 balls, which is the fastest by any team. They also secured the record for the fastest team 100, which was achieved in 39 balls, beating their own record of 39, set against England in the 2015 World Cup.
19 – Nuwan Kulasekara's 19 was the top-score for Sri Lanka in the innings. It was their fourth-lowest top score in ODIs when all batsmen have batted.
117 – Sri Lanka been bowled out for fewer than 117 against New Zealand twice, before today. Their lowest was 112 in 2007 at Christchurch.
20.50 – Dushmantha Chameera’s economy rate was the third-worst for a bowler who bowled at least 2 overs in an ODI innings. Steven Finn’s economy rate of 24.50 against New Zealand in the World Cup was the worst and all four of the worst economy rates have been against the Kiwis.
93 – The runs scored by Guptill in the first 50 balls of his team's innings is the most by any batsman. the second-best is another Kiwi, McCullum with an unbeaten 80 in only the first six overs in the aforementioned ODI against Bangladesh.
250 – New Zealand’s margin of victory (250 balls) was the seventh-largest in ODI history. The best was England's victory over Canada in 1979 with 277 balls to spare.
310 – Guptill’s strike rate was the second-highest for a fifty-plus score in ODIs. The record for highest strike rate is held by AB de Villiers, for his 338.63 set during his 44-ball 149 against West Indies earlier in the year.
