Stats: Top 10 records in 10 years of IPL history

The Indian Premier League was founded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2007, and the inaugural season was played in 2008. Since then, the IPL emerged as the most successful league in cricket history. Now, 11 years down the line, many records have been made or broken every season.

As the 11th season of IPL is going to kick off in April next year, let's have a look at the top 10 current records.


#1 Most runs

Suresh Raina, the player who played the highest number of matches in IPL history, is also the highest run scorer in the tournament. He scored 4540 runs with the help of 1 century and 31 half-centuries.

Raina is the only batsman to score 400+ runs seven consecutive times. Due to his consistency, he is the most reliable middle-order batsman in the game.

RCB captain Virat Kohli is at 2nd with 4418 runs. Going by the rate of run scored by Virat Kohli, Raina’s IPL record can be broken. Let's have a look at the top 5 batsmen on the list:

#2 Most Wickets

Lasith Malinga is IPL's top wicket-taker

Lasith Malinga, the most dangerous limited-overs bowler, is the highest wicket-taker in IPL so far. He has picked a total of 154 wickets with an average of 19.01 in 110 matches. 13 for 5 is his best bowling figure in the IPL.

Due to his sling action, he bowls dipping slower-ones, yorkers and deceptive cutters with ease. This has made him the death-over specialist in the shorter formats of the game.

Behind Malinga, Amit Mishra and Harbhajan Singh have taken 134 and 127 wickets respectively.This makes Malinga the only bowler to take 150+ wickets in IPL history.

#3 Highest total

Before 10 years ago, if someone told you that 263 for 5 is a team total in 20 overs then you might not have believed them. Royal Challengers Bangalore scored an unbelievable 263 runs in a match against Pune Warriors India in 2013 IPL. This is not only the highest team total in IPL, but also the highest innings total by any team in a T20 match.

The innings went on the back of a Chris Gayle blitz. The tall Caribbean batsman smashed Pune bowlers to get 175 runs in just 66 balls. Royal Challengers Bangalore won that match by 130 runs.

The second-highest total in the list is also by RCB, for their innings of 248/3 against Gujarat Lions in 2016 IPL. Here is the list of the top 5 totals:

#4 Lowest Team Total

It is said that Cricket is the best leveller. The Royal Challenger Bangalore tops the list here as well. The history was written in Eden Gardens, Kolkata(2017) when RCB were bowled out for just 49 runs by Kolkata Knight Riders. Chasing a target of 132 runs, RCB's three players were dismissed for a duck and none got into the double digits. Colin de Grandhomme, Nathan Coulter-Nile and Chris Woakes got three wickets each in the game.

They broke the record of Rajasthan Royals' 58 runs in 2009 IPL.

#5 Highest individual score

It was a nightmare for bowlers when Chris Gayle scored 175 runs for 66 balls in a match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and the erstwhile Pune Warriors. The fastest century (30 balls), highest individual T20 score (175*) and the most numbers of individual sixes (17), Chris Gayle did it all in that innings.

Gayle went on full assault against the Pune bowlers with his strokes all over the ground.

His once-in-a-lifetime knock simply blew Pune away, and netted a 130 runs victory for Bangalore. Gayle, with his big-hitting style, reached his own century in just the ninth over of the match.

The previous record was with Brendon McCullum, when he scored 158 runs in the very first innings of the IPL. McCullum hammered 10 fours and 13 sixes for his unbeaten 158 off 78 deliveries as he guided KKR to a total of 222 against RCB.

#6 Best bowling figures

Rajasthan Royals showcased the most unexpected gameplay in the inaugural season of IPL. Despite the fact that Shane Warne was then the only big player in the team, they startled all the spectators. Sohail Tanvir is one of the reasons behind that success.

The best bowling figures by any player in IPL history are by Pakistani Left-arm medium-fast bowler Sohail Tanvir with 6/14 against CSK in 2008.

In the 24th match of IPL 2008, Tanvir removed 6 Chennai Super Kings batsmen to restrict them to a mere 109 runs. Rajasthan Royals won the match by 8 wickets (with 34 balls to spare). Tanvir also became the highest wicket taker of that season with 22 wickets in 11 matches.

#7 Highest successful run chases

This record belongs to the mighty Rajasthan Royals. In the inaugural season of IPL, Rajasthan Royals chased down 217 runs against the Deccan Chargers. This 11-year-old record was fabricated with the astonishing performance of Yusuf Pathan.

Batting first, DC scored 214 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Australian ace Andrew Symonds scored a massive 117 runs from 53 balls for DC. In reply, Yusuf Pathan played one of his best innings in the IPL, scoring 61 of 28 balls. Graeme Smith also contributed 71 runs in 45 balls and Captain Shane Warne with a cameo of 22 runs in 9 balls.

The record was established in the 8th match of IPL history and is still unbeaten.

#8 Lowest scores defended

CSK

One of the most successful teams in IPL, Chennai Super Kings holds the record for defending the lowest score in IPL. CSK defended 116 runs against the Kings XI Punjab in Durban, 2009.

The Super Kings were unable to convert a decent start of 54 for 1 in 7 overs, and were bowled out for 116.

The KXIP run-chase never started, as they were struggling from the first ball. Unable to build any strong partnership, Punjab ended their innings at 92 for 8 in 20 overs. From CSK, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ashwin and Raina took 2 wickets each.

#9 Most wins

The men in blue, Mumbai Indians, hold the record for most wins in the IPL history. They have managed to win a total of 91 matches over the last 10 years. After an initial struggle in the first two seasons, the club has boomed from the 3rd season until now.

They have won 3 IPL titles and 2 CL T20 titles to become the most successful team in IPL history.

Mumbai is a team with the legacy of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Pointing. They are also the first IPL team to win 100 T20 matches (IPL+CLT20).

Captain Rohit Sharma is the highest run scorer, and pacer Lasith Malinga the highest wicket-taker for the team.

CSK tops the list in terms of winning percentage(60.68) so far. Delhi Daredevils has the most disappointing performance in the last decade. DD tops the list of most number of defeats - 82 losses - in the tournament.


#10 Largest victories

Mumbai Indians holds the record of the biggest margin victory in IPL. Mumbai defeated Delhi by a massive 146 runs in IPL 2017. Batting first, Mumbai had put a mammoth 212 runs on the board for the loss of 3 wickets. Kieron Pollard scored 63 runs off 35 balls and Simmons contributed 66 runs off 43 balls to lift the run rate.

In reply, DD failed miserably. They only managed to score 66 runs for 10 wickets in 13.4 overs. For MI, Karn Sharma and Harbhajan Singh took 3 wickets each.

With their team effort, MI broke the record of the largest victory by Royal Challengers Bangalore (144 runs) against Gujarat Lions.
