6 bowlers to dismiss all 11 batsmen in a Test match

In the several decades of Test cricket, there have been only six occasions where a single bowler picked the wickets of all the eleven batsmen of the opposition team in a Test match. In reality, dismissing each of the opposition's players is a rare feat to achieve. Grabbing ten wickets in a Test match is always special, but picking up the wicket of every opposition player is even more special.

Even Anil Kumble, who picked up 10 wickets in a single inning of a Test match, couldn't make it to the list as he was unable to dismiss Waqar Younis in either of the two innings. India's Ravichandran Ashwin once dismissed every player who batted in Australia's tour to Inda in 2013 in the overall Test series but couldn't achieve a similar feat in a single match.

Now, let's take a look at the six bowlers who were able to dismiss all the 11 batsmen of the opposition team in Test cricket till date:

#1 Jim Laker

Jim Laker is well-known in the cricket world for his achievement of picking up 19 wickets in a Test match, the most for any bowler in a single Test match.

Jim Laker dismissed 19 Aussies at the cost of just 90 runs in England's Test match against Australia in Old Trafford in 1956, in the Ashes. Laker got hold of 9 wickets in the first innings and 10 wickets in the second. In fact, no other bowler has got more than 17 wickets in a professional match in Test cricket (including FC). Laker's achievement of 19 wickets in a single match is one of the few records which is unlikely to be broken ever.

Laker also dismissed all the eleven players of Australia in the same Test match. Laker dismissed each of the Aussie batsmen twice, excluding Jim Burke and Ian Johnson.

As a result of Laker's outstanding bowling performance, England were victorious against their rivals by an innings and 170 runs.

#2 Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan

History was created when Srinivas Venkataraghavan, a member of India's penetrative spin quartet, upset the Kiwis by dismissing all of their eleven players in a single Test match in the 4th Test match of New Zealand's tour to India, in 1965.

Srinivas is the only Indian bowler to achieve this remarkable fit till date. The accurate off-break bowler picked up 8 wickets in the first innings of the Test match; John Reid, Bruce Taylor and Richard Collinge were the only three batsmen who survived from getting dismissed by Srinivas. However, all three of them were dismissed by Srinivas later in New Zealand's second inning of the game.

The match-winning bowling performance from Srinivas, where he picked up 12 wickets conceding just 152 runs, helped India demolish the Kiwis by 7 wickets, as India had to chase just above 70 runs in the final innings of the match.

#3 Geoff Dymock

Geoff Dymock is one of the only two fast bowlers and the only left-arm pacer to dismiss all the opponent's batsmen in a Test match. Dymock, who had a short-spanned Test career of just 21 matches, achieved the feat against India in Kanpur, way back in 1979.

Geoff Dymock had a five-wicket haul to his name in India's 1st innings and picked up 7 wickets in the 2nd innings. He was only the third bowler to achieve the feat in his time.

Interestingly, Dymock is also the only bowler to achieve this feat in a losing cause, as Kapil Dev's heroics with the ball in Australia's chase earned a 153-run victory for the hosts. Geoff Dymock had figures of 12/166 in that particular match.

#4 Abdul Qadir

The stylish wrist-spinner, Abdul Qadir, was successful to enlist his name in the glorious list when he achieved the feat against his favourite opposition, England, in the very first match of England's tour to Pakistan, 1987.

Abdul was unlucky not to pick one of the ten English wickets, as he finished with 9 wickets in the 1st innings. However, the Lahore-born superstar picked up the remaining two wickets in the second innings of the match, as his bowling figures at the end of the match were 13/101.

Courtesy of the magical bowling performance of Qadir, the Miandad-led Pakistani side were victorious by an innings and 87 runs.

#5 Waqar Younis

Another Pakistani legend, Waqar Younis, achieved the outstanding feat in 1990 against the Kiwis. Waqar achieved the feat in the third and final Test match of the Test series, which Pakistan had won 3-0, in Faisalabad.

Pakistan after getting all-out for just 102 in their innings fought back in the game by restricting New Zealand to 217 runs, after New Zealand's lower-order batsmen added some valuable runs. Waqar picked 7 wickets conceding 76 runs in Kiwi's 1st innings. After that, Pakistan put a formidable total of 357 runs which was defended by the Pakistani bowling attack led by Waqar Younis, who got a 5-wicket haul in the 2nd innings of New Zealand.

As a result of a series of good performances from Waqar Younis, Pakistan won the match by 65 runs.

#6 Muttiah Muralitharan

Arguably one of the greatest spinners of all time, Muttiah Muralitharan became the latest entry to the magnificent list in 2000 in Galle, when Muralitharan picked up the wickets of all the eleven South African batsmen.

Muralitharan picked six important wickets in the first innings and seven wickets in the second. At the end of the match, he had bowling figures of 13/171. Boucher and Pollock got dismissed by Muralitharan twice.

After the brilliant bowling performances from Muralitharan and outstanding cricket from Jayasuriya (148) and Jayawardene (167), Sri Lanka got a comfortable victory of an innings and 15 runs.
