England v India: Specsavers 3rd Test - Day One
England v India: Specsavers 3rd Test - Day One

The ongoing test series between India and England is turning out to be a cracker of a contest with India winning the 3rd test. The scoreline is still very much in favour of England but the momentum not so much.

This time Virat Kohli's team was successful in reversing the psychological scars put forth on them before by the English Team. While the first test match was a very competitive one, it also displayed and reinforced the belief of what was test cricket capable of.

The third test match was a clinical performance by the team, where the batting and fielding the two weaklings in the first two outings. The biggest positive to have come out of the match was India's batting, that too the likes of Rahane and Pujara who were among runs in the match.

So, on that note here is a look at the top 10 Indian Batsmen with most runs in England for India-

10.) Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli, the name synonymous with passion, in your face attitude has changed his fortunes this time around by scoring a whopping 440 runs in 6 innings across 3 test matches in England.

On that dreadful and mostly forgettable 2014 tour, England pace spearhead had his number by getting him out 5 times. But, it was not to be this time, as Kohli was better prepared for the tough swinging and seaming conditions for England.

Barring the small blip at Lord's, his innings of 149 in the first innings is rated among one of the best players in England. And, with the 100 at Nottingham, he has quashed any remaining doubts about his ability to play in these conditions. The aberration of 2014 has been finally put to rest.

RECORD:

8 TESTS/ 16 INNINGS /574 RUNS/ AVG:35.88/ 2 Centuries

9.) VVS Laxman

Test - Day Four

VVS Laxman was the go-to guy for India during the tricky 4th innings chases on a tough Day 4-5 pitches. He was part of the famous middle order that had India's all-time greats playing and scoring runs all around the world like he did.

While he was peerless and unforgiving to the Australians, his record in England though not bad by any means falls short in comparison to his performance in other countries.

Fondly remembered as being a Very Very Special, he had 5 50+ scores in England, with two of them coming at the home of cricket, Lord's. Unsurprisingly, he also recorded the highest score for him in England which was of 74 runs in the 2nd innings at Lords, from the famous 2002 India in England series.

RECORD:

11 TESTS/ 19 INNINGS /586 RUNS/ AVG:34.47

8.) Mohd. Azharuddin

Mohd. Azharuddin amongst all the Batsman in the list had one of his most famous and celebrated rivalries against the English Cricket Team. He had scored 6 centuries against them with 3 hundreds coming against them in his first 3 test matches of his career.

He scored a sublime 110 against them in his very first match and continued to torment them in their own backyard as well. The 1990 tour of England became famous for Tendulkar's gritty 114 runs, Graham Gooch 333 and 123 and Azharuddin's phenomenal tour to England.

He scored 426 runs on that tour with a swashbuckling 121 off 111 balls at Lord's and 179 runs at 179 runs at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, his hundred at Lords could not help save test match for his country but he got his name etched on The honours board.

RECORD:

7.)Kapil Dev

Kapil Dev India 175 not out V Zimbabwe 1983 Cricket World Cup

It was the 25th of June, the year was 1983 and India's arguably most famous sporting achievement was made possible by the mystical all-rounder, Kapil Dev. His exploits ranged from scoring 175 in a world cup league match to save India the blushes by hitting 4 consecutive sixes against England at Lord's in 1990 to prevent a follow-on.

Lord's does have quite a few special moments for the Indian Cricket but none more so than lifting the cricket world cup as minnows and then becoming world beaters. In fact, Indian side also went on to win the 1986 tour to England 2-0 in 3 test match series with Kapil Dev as the captain.

He has a lone century to go with 5 50+ scores in England. He played a knock of 110 runs which came at Kennington Oval in the 1990 tour of England.

RECORD:

13 TESTS/ 20 INNINGS /638 RUNS/ AVG:35.44/ 1 100

6.)Gundappa R. Viswanath

In the era of the Original Little Master Sunil Gavaskar, there was this another diminutive player who was an elegant right hand-batsman with strong supple wrists. He was popularly known as Vishy and was used to save his best for the worst literally.

He was known to anchor the innings and he raised the price of his wicket whenever the chips were down. This led to him playing a very special knock of 97 against West Indies at Madras in 1974-75 series, which Wisden later rated as 2nd best non-century in there Wisden 100.

He ended up playing 91 tests and scoring 6080 runs at an average of 41.93, but here the statistics do not tell the whole story as he averaged over 50 against the strongest teams of the era such as Australia and West Indies. And, also out of his 14 test centuries, 13 of them came in a winning cause.

RECORD:

5) Sourav Ganguly

1st Test: England v India
1st Test: England v India

He was and is still affectionately called as Dada(aka Elder Brother). He most definitely worked like an Elder Brother by protecting and saving Indian cricket from the clutches of corruption that rocked the cricketing world in the early 2000's

It was during his time there was an overhaul of the culture in Indian Cricket going about there business from surviving to actually winning the test matches, especially in overseas conditions.

He was a taskmaster but also a more than capable southpaw especially in England where he made back to back centuries with a name on Lord's honours board in his debut test by scoring 131 and followed it up 136 runs in the third test. He went on to score 3 centuries against England in England

RECORD:

4.)Dilip Vengsarkar

He was in the truest sense of the word the Lord at the Lord's Cricket Ground. He is the only Indian Player and also the only Overseas player to have scored 3 centuries at Lords. He has scored more than half the number of his runs at Lords than he has scored in the whole of England.

In fact, his numbers at Lords is a wonderful dream to have for any batsman and has become a statistical gold when compared in an Indian Context. He has scored 508 runs at the ground in eight outings, with 3 centuries to his name at an average of 72.57 with highest of 157.

When he retired 1992, he was behind his batting partner Sunil Gavaskar in many matches, playing the sheet anchor role coming at number 3 position.

RECORD:

3.)Sunil Gavaskar

Whenever there will a discussion involving the greats of the game with people selecting their all-time XI's, it will be very hard to brush aside the statistics of gutsy cricketer who at the time of retirement was the leading run scorer in tests and also in the number of centuries.

His audacity of not wearing a helmet even when arguably the fastest bowling generation of bowlers thriving and ready to draw first blood. He was none other than Sunil Gavaskar. This was probably the only thing matched by another batting legend of the time Sir IVA Richards.

Their Batting styles completely contrasting but had a prevalent sense of control in the way they batted. While Gavaskar believed in blunting out the opposition bowlers, while Richards believed in thrashing them. This all also coincides with their respective record in England which were tremendous, to say the least.

RECORD:

16 TESTS/ 28 INNINGS /1152 RUNS/ AVG:41.81/ 2 100's

2.)Rahul Dravid

England v India: 1st npower Test - Day Three
England v India: 1st
npower

Rahul Dravid, in England Lord's 2nd test match 1996, in his debut innings got out at 95. It was 2011 Rahul Dravid at Lord's same ground different conditions, but this time he got his redemption.

He scored 103 runs in 2nd innings albeit in a losing cause, but it was a series to remember for Rahul Dravid who scored 3 Hundreds in 4 test match in that series. It was a disappointing series for cricket fans but it was delightful for the cricket purists to watch arguably the nicest man in cricket on his last tour to England.

His record in England is second to none, but the most beautiful and gut-wrenching moment of that series was when he came out to bat in the first innings at no 2 , of what was a dead rubber and foregone series and carried his bat through the innings. And, then England put India to follow-on, to which the legendary batsman returned to save his side from being white-washed.

RECORD:

13 TESTS/ 23 INNINGS /1376 RUNS/ AVG:68.8/ 6 100's

1.)Sachin Tendulkar

Second Test: England v India - Day Two
Second Test: England v India - Day Two

Sachin Tendulkar always had a wonderful time in whites against the Englishmen, playing in England. The God of cricket's famous 193 at Headingley, Leeds led to a famous win that eventually helped India in drawing the series.

He scored at all famous cricket stadiums in England, but he had a particularly torrid time at Lord's, the most famous of them all. He scored a total of 195 runs with an average of 21.57 and the highest of 37.

But as has been his greatness in playing the game, this anomaly has also now become a stuff of legends that have resulted in some die-hard fanatics in questioning the Honours Board Records and should they actually even matter.

RECORD:

17 TESTS/ 30 INNINGS /1575 RUNS/ AVG:54.31/ 4 100's
