The first Test match was played between England and Australia in 1877. Since then, teams have looked to amass big totals to intimidate their opponents and win the game. A score of more than 600 runs is considered huge and the team stands a high chance of winning the match. Such a score also emboldens the captain to take risks and get the opposition out by attacking from the very start.

The first ever score of more than 600 runs was made by Australia against England at Melbourne. Today, we take a look at the top five teams who have most totals of 600 or more runs in Test matches.


#5 Pakistan - 15

Pakistan may not be known for their batting, but they have managed to cross a total of 600 or more runs 15 times in the Test cricket. Ranked fifth in this list, they have played more than 750 innings since their debut match in 1952.

The highest-ever Test score of Pakistan is 6/765 against Sri Lanka at Karachi in 2009. They scored a total of more than 600 runs for the first time in 1958 against the West Indies at Bridgetown. The match was drawn with final scores of (579/9 and 28/0) made by West Indies against the Pakistani total of 657/8.


#4 England - 20

The fourth team on this list is England with a tally of 20 such scores. They made their first-ever score of more than 600 runs in 1928 against Australia at Sydney. England (636 and 16/2) defeated Australia (253 and 397) by eight wickets in that match.

Out of more than 1800 innings, they have crossed 700 runs once, 800 runs once, and 900 runs once. Their highest score was 903/7 (declared) against Australia in 1938 at the Oval. They have won the second highest number of matches in Test cricket after Australia.

They made their first-ever score of more than 600 runs in 1948 against India at Delhi. West Indies (631) drew that match with India (454 and 220/6). During the 1970s and 80s, they were the most formidable side in the world with their excellent bowling and batting line-up. They have played more than 975 innings and scored more than 600 runs 20 times so far.

After Australia and England, they have won third most number of matches in Test cricket. Their highest ever score is 790/3 (declared) at Kingston against Pakistan in 1958.

India has always been known for its batting prowess. They made their first-ever score of more than 600 runs in 1979 against the West Indies at Kanpur. India (655/7) drew the match with the West Indies (452/8). India has managed to cross a total of 700 runs four times.

Their highest ever total has been 759/7 (declared) against England in 2016 at Chennai. India has played more than 950 innings so far.

The Australian side has been the most successful side in the history of Test cricket. Having played more than 1500 innings, they have managed to cross 600 runs, 34 times. Their highest-ever total is 758/8 (declared) against the West Indies in 1955 at Kingston.

They made their first-ever total of more than 600 runs in 1925 against England at Melbourne. Australia (600 and 250) defeated England ((479 and 280) by 81 runs. They have crossed a total of 700 runs four times so far.
