Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019: 5 Indian bowlers with hat-tricks in the competition

The final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019 between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka saw heavyweights of India cricket like Ravichandran Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik, Murali Vijay, Vijay Shankar, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Manish Pandey battle it out to become the best 50-over side in the country this season. Eventually, Karnataka inflicted defeat on Tamil Nadu by 60 runs (VJD method) in a rain-curtailed encounter.

By the end of the first innings, Tamil Nadu were dismissed for 252 runs, thanks to a hat-trick by the experienced paceman Abhimanyu Mithun. Birthday boy Mithun became the first Karnataka bowler to achieve this feat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He also became the first fast bowler to have taken a hat-trick in the tournament and also represented India. All the other players making this list are spin bowlers.

#1 Murali Kartik

Left-arm spin bowler Murali Kartik claimed a hat-trick for Railways in their Vijay Hazare Trophy encounter at Indore’s Holkar Cricket Stadium on February 11, 2010. He completed his hat-trick by taking the wickets of Vivek Yadav, Pankaj Singh and Vikrant Yadav.

Vivek Yadav was clean bowled, Pankaj Singh was caught by Faiz Fazal and Vikrant Yadav gave a simple catch back to Murali Kartik to complete three in three. Chasing a target of 257, Railways won the game by four wickets and 14 balls remaining, thanks to a four-wicket haul by Murali Kartik, giving away only 31 runs in nine overs.

He represented India in eight Tests, 37 ODIs and one T20I, taking a combined 61 wickets. In the era of a dominant Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the Indian line-up, Murali Kartik remained mostly on the fringes of the national team before making his Test debut against South Africa at Mumbai on February 24, 2000.

#2 Amit Mishra

In a match where Haryana’s Harshal Patel took five wickets to register an easy victory against Jammu & Kashmir by 10 wickets. Amit Mishra managed to walk away with the limelight.

In a Group B encounter of the Vijay Hazare Trophy played at the KSCA Cricket Ground at Alur on December 13, 2015, Haryana chased down a target of 76 runs with 234 remaining. Amit Mishra took the wickets Ram Dayal, Waseem Raza and bowler Rohit Sharma in three successive deliveries to complete his hat-trick. He clean-bowled Ram Dayal and Rohit Sharma while trapping Waseem Raza plumb leg-before wicket.

Amit Mishra made his ODI debut in 2003 against South Africa in Dhaka. He represented India in 22 Tests, 36 ODIs, and 10 T20Is, taking a combined total of 156 international wickets. He played his last match for India on February 1, 2017, against England in Bengaluru.


#3 Parvez Rasool

In one of the major upsets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2017, Jammu & Kashmir defeated Saurashtra by 23 runs. Captain Parvez Rasool brought his A-game and performed well with both bat and ball to help his team script a famous win. Batting first, J&K could only manage 170 runs, thanks to half-centuries from Parvez Rasool (53 runs off 48 balls) and Ram Dayal (50 runs off 75 deliveries). Defending a small total, Saurashtra was blown away by Rasool’s hat-trick which included the wickets of Chirag Jani, Jaydev Unadkat and Shaurya Sanandia.

Parvez Rasool represented India in one T20I and one ODI. Against Bangladesh in Dhaka on June 15, 2014, he played his only ODI and took two wickets in the process. Three years later he returned to the national team in a T20I at Kanpur against England. He took the wicket of captain Eoin Morgan, giving away 32 runs in his four overs. He remains the only player from Jammu & Kashmir to have represent India.

#4 Shahbaz Nadeem

In the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shahbaz Nadeem took an incredible eight for 10 against Rajasthan to register the best figures in List A cricket. He took all eight wickets in eight overs and was on the verge of taking all ten wickets. His eight-for included a hat-trick as well. He took the wickets of Mahipal Lomror, Chetan Bisht on the last two balls of his sixth over and then came back to claim Tajinder Singh lbw on the first ball of his seventh.

He matched the record of Rahul Sanghvi (eight for 15) but gave five fewer runs. Chaminda Vaas holds the record for the best figures in ODI cricket and third-best in List A- eight for 19 against Zimbabwe in 2001-02.

Nadeem made his debut for India in the last Test against South Africa at his ground in Ranchi. One of the veteran spinners in the domestic circuit, Nadeem has achieved almost everything a left-arm spinner can in a first-class career. In his 111 matches at the first-class level, he has taken 428 wickets at an average of only 28.42. In the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season, he was the highest wicket-taker but wasn’t even considered for the Rest of India team in the Irani Trophy.


#5 Abhimanyu Mithun

In the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019, Abhimanyu Mithun took the wickets of Shahrukh Khan, M Mohammed, and Murugan Ashwin to complete his hat-trick. He became the first Karnataka bowler to take a hat-trick in a Vijay Hazare tie. He is also the only fast bowler to achievement in the Vijay Hazare trophy and represent India as well. Mithun also took the wickets of Murali Vijay and Vijay Shankar to end the match with a five-wicket haul.

He has played four Tests for India and taken nine wickets. In ODIs, he represented the country five times, taking three wickets in the process. He made his Test debut against Sri Lanka at Galle on July 18, 2010. Before that, he had already featured in the ODI side, making his debut against South Africa at Ahmedabad on February 27, 2010.
