Types of cycles used for mountain biking

Mountain biking is very different from road biking. And it is no surprise that the bikes used for each are completely different. Mountain bikes are created for wild trails - off-road cycling on non-paved roads. Ever since mountain biking became a sport in the 1970s, there have been a variety of cycles made for the same. Now, there are 5 major types of bikes that are used by riders who want to participate in competitive mountain biking events:

1. Cross Country Bikes

These bikes are usually very light weight and are essentially used for riders who go on long uphill and downhill stretches. These bikes are good for many types of terrain, however, due to their softer suspension (2-4”), they are not ideal for very rough terrain.

2. Downhill Bikes

These bikes are the best when it comes to speed. Hence, they are extremely useful during downhill biking, however, they take a beating when going uphill. Of all the bikes, this category has the most suspension and hence can go through extemely rough terrain with ease.

3. Dirt Jumping Bikes

These bikes are small and are extremely similar to BMX bikes in terms of jumping. It can easily withstand big jumps, but are effecient for playful use as they have a low frame and these can also be used for urban riding.

4. Free-ride Bikes

Having broad wheels and a long-travel suspension, these bikes are good for steep jumps and stunts. They are a cross between Downhill and Dirt Jump bikes, but are easier to pedal than Downhill bikes. Professional riders have been recorded to jump from a height of around 25m on these bikes.

5. All-mountain bikes

One of the heaviest bikes in the market, these are built to handle rough terrain. They are very useful in uphill climbing without losing the speed in downhill cycling. They are considered to be a cross between Cross Country and Free-ride bikes.

Apart from these bikes, there are other two major categories of bikes based on suspension:

1. Full Suspension Bikes

They are easier to control and are more comfortable, but are on the heavy side. As the name suggests, these bikes have both – front and rear suspension.

2. Hardtail Bikes

These bikes have front suspension, but no rear shockers. Being lighter and easier to peddle, they are more durable for non-paved terrain biking.

These are the major types of bikes that are available for mountain biking. Which one would you choose?
