Video games are a piece of art, and some titles that were released in the previous decade pushed the boundaries of what a video game could be. However, a few other games managed to do the exact opposite and failed miserably right after the launch.

What was more disappointing regarding these titles was the fact the gaming community held high expectations regarding the games before their official launch, which only made the fail even harder to take for the passionate fans.

Quite a few games managed to disappoint amid much hype, and in this article, let us look closer at the six video games that failed to live up to their hype.

#6 Too Human

No one would've probably expected a game to perform as bad as Too Human did after being stuck in the development cycle for nearly ten years.

Initially planned for a release in 1999 for Sony's PlayStation, the game finally saw the light of day in 2008 as an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Set in a completely reimagined sci-fi themed Norse mythology, the game did well during the initial days of the launch but failed to keep up the momentum after the stinging reviews started pouring in. It received acclaim for its sound design and voice acting but failed to gather allies for its overall gameplay experience.

#5 Star Wars Battlefront II

Heavy microtransactions ruin game sales - a lesson EA learnt during the release of the much-hyped Star Wars Battlefront II.

The 2017 action-shooter had a very good multiplayer system that received universal praise; however, the game's single-player campaign and the presence of microtransactions ruined the Star Wars experience. One had to either pay to unlock content or grind for unusually long hours.

After severe backlash, EA withdrew microtransactions from the game shortly after launch for a temporary duration but never could capture the imagination of both casual gamers and passionate Star Wars fans.

#4 Haze

Touted as a 'Halo killer,' Haze is a first-person shooter developed by Free Radical Design that was launched only for the PlayStation 3.

Before its launch, Haze garnered supreme traction among the gaming communities, leading to huge expectations. However, when the game finally hit the stores, nothing other than disappointment greeted the developers and publishers.

A short single-player campaign, technical issues and an underwhelming plot largely contributed to the criticism. Lack of diverse multiplayer modes only made matters worse for Haze.

#3 Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem Forever, the sequel to the hugely successful Duke Nukem 3D had big shoes to fill upon its launch in 2011. Sadly, the game failed miserably, disappointing a whole lot of fans of the long-standing Duke Nukem franchise.

Both critics and fans criticised the game's simple mechanics, mediocre graphics and long loading times. The humour aspects, which have a long relationship with the Duke Nukem franchise, also received huge criticism.

None of the versions of the game (PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) managed to cross 55/100 score on Metacritic.

#2 Mass Effect: Andromeda

Before its release in March 2017, it was one of the most anticipated games from Bioware. Both the fans of the original Mass Effect trilogy and the new gamers were very much excited about the game's setting, which takes place in the Andromeda galaxy.

After that highly charged and deeply polarised ending of Mass Effect 3, fans expected something similar with Mass Effect: Andromeda. However, the latest game in the Mass Effect series couldn't achieve that and was a disappointment as it simply failed to capture the imagination of gamers.

The idea of space exploration felt monotonous and the story couldn't connect to players the way the original trilogy did.

#1 Fallout 76

Fallout 76 - Bethesda Studios' first online multiplayer game was a colossal disappointment. Touted as a prequel to the previous Fallout games, naturally, the expectations were astronomically high for this game.

However, after the launch, it wasn't like any other Fallout game. Marred with technical issues and a lack of gameplay purpose, Fallout 76 was an anomaly in Bethesda's portfolio.

Both fans and critics severely criticised the game with many going to the extent of asking Bethesda to quit the project altogether.

The Guardian summarised Fallout 76 with a very elegant line - a pointless walk in the post-apocalypse.
