The newest entry to the battle royale genre: Apex Legends continues to shatter all records. The game, developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts was released on February 4, 2019 without any prior marketing or advertisements.

In a Twitter announcement 2 days ago, the game announced that it had hit a new record player base of 50 million gamers. They said that they were humbled by the support they were receiving and cannot wait to show what's next for the game.

This 50 million players milestone already makes the game boast of a quarter of the total players of Fortnite. Apex has also been getting a lot of views on both Twitch and YouTube. It has overtaken both Fortnite and League of Legends several times in its first month of release as the most watched game on Twitch.

In spite of the wide popularity this game is apparently experiencing, Fortnite does not seem to be dying out as well. Many players were speculating that Apex was the replacement for Fortnite. But, this does not seem to be the case. On February 16, a time during when Apex Legends was enjoying the initial hype of its release, Fortnite hit a new record. According to PCGamesN, Fortnite hit a new concurrent player base record with 7.6 million players on a normal non-event day. For those of you who may not know what concurrent is, it is the amount of people playing the game at the same time. It thus seems that the battle royale genre has space for more than just one game.

It still remains to be seen how Apex Legends maintains this player base and retains most of the players. There are people who will argue that the game is just enjoying the reaction to its hype and will die out slowly in the future. Respawn Entertainment, on the other hand, will not let this happen as they are engaging with the community and putting out new content very fast.
