Midfielders are the most important players in a team and if they do not perform well, the whole team suffers. A lot of players in the Premier League this season have been way below par and these players have cost their sides a few points.

Here are 5 Premier League midfielders who have been way below par and deserve a downgrade:

#5 – Danny Drinkwater

Antonio Conte's departure has not affected any Chelsea player like Danny Drinkwater. The midfielder has not made a single matchday squad, let alone play a minute under Maurizio Sarri.

Rated at 79 in FIFA 19, Drinkwater is unfortunately set for a downgrade. The Englishman can do nothing about it and despite not doing anything wrong, he is going to pay the price.

He is now set to be pushed to 77 in FUT but it will easily go unnoticed. Even players who are just making their team have not really used the former Leicester City man as there are way better options for the same price.

#4 – Jack Wilshere

Jack Wilshere left Arsenal and moved to West Ham United to rejuvenate his career but unfortunately for him, injuries have followed him to the London stadium too. The midfielder has been out of action for a couple of months now and is slowly regaining match fitness.

Rated at 80 in FIFA 19, there is no way he is going to manage to keep hold of that rating after the winter rating refresh. He did have a good start but the injuries have all but forced EA to give him a downgrade.

It might not be a huge downgrade, but he will be pushed to 78 or maybe even 77.

#3 – Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic is slowly getting back to form but his performances in the first half of the season have cost him. The Serbian was slow, sloppy and outmuscled all the time under Jose Mourinho and there was nothing he could do right in a match.

The former Chelsea man was easily United's best defensive midfielder last season and when he got an upgrade to 86 in FIFA 19, not many could have argued that he didn't deserve it. However, with his performances earlier this season, he is certainly among the players who have been rated way higher than what they should be.

Matic is now set for a downgrade and that will see his ratings come down from 86 to 84. His passing and defending stats will be the ones affected the most while his dribbling might also take a hit.

#2 – Naby Keita

When Liverpool signed Naby Keita, it looked like he was the missing piece in the Reds' midfield. However, looking at the current situation at the Anfield club, he is very much excess to requirement.

Rated at 83 in the game, Keita is likely to get a downgrade to 82 for sure. His dribbling and passing stats are bound to be affected the most.

#1 – Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan is nothing but a squad player at Manchester City right now. He has literally no chance of getting into the starting XI as there are far too many better players at the club.

And whenever he was given a chance by Guardiola, he did very little to impress. Rated at 84 in FIFA 19, he is expected to get a downgrade that will see his rating pushed to 82 or lower.
