Gen G esports, the Korean powerhouse, added another feather in their cap as they won the inaugural PUBG Global Championship after edging Faze Clan and 4am in the final game of the tournament. Gen G will also be taking home $2,000,000 as winnings with second placed Faze taking home $600,000. This is the second international win for the team, as they had won the TPP event in the PUBG Global Invitational 2018, as Gen G Gold. 'Ubah' from Faze Clan was awarded the highest kills award and will take $300,000.
Format
The 16 team played 12 matches across 2 days, with 6 matches on each day. On the first day, the first 3 games were on Erangel, followed by one on Sanhok and last two games on Miramar. On the second day the first 3 matches were on Miramar, followed by one game on Sanhok and the last two games of the tournament were played on Erangel.
Day 1
The first day of the Grand Finals started with Gen G esports taking two consecutive wins in the first two games. While Gen G did fall off later in the day, they finished first on the leaderboard with 56 points, closely followed by Chinese powerhouse 4am and Korean sister squads, Entus Ace and Entus Force in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place respectively. The fifth spot was taken by Faze Clan, who started the day quite slowly but came second and first in the last two matches. While the other teams in the lobby had quite average performances, Wclick and GEX had forgettable performance as both of them took the last two spots.
Day 2
With only 13 points separating the first and sixth-placed team, the championship title was an open race. While Faze Clan did start the day with a win, it was Gen G who came out all guns blazing as they came second in the first two matches of the day and racked up 25 kills in both the matches combined. With the competition looking like a two-horse race, 4am stepped up the ante as they claimed victories on the third and fifth maps to make the title race a three-way tie, with only 7 points separating the top 3 heading into the last game. With the last games circle hard shifting to the west, the first team to drop out of the race was 4am. With Gen G picking up almost 10 kills in the game and while Faze Clan did finish third, it wasnt enough to deny the South Koreans another win at a major international event.
A Championship Celebratory in-game Item will be created for the first-ever World Champion and 25% of the revenue from its sales will go to Gen G and other teams from the PUBG Korean League. This win by Gen G has shown the dominance of the Eastern teams as 4 of the top 5 were from Korea (Gen G and Entus Force) and China (4am and VC Gaming). There was also disappointment for the North American fans as the best placed team was the Rumblers, who placed 8th. With the 2019 season coming to an end, the teams will be taking a well-deserved rest and it will be interesting to see the roster changes all the teams will make in preparation for the 2020 season.
