Roaming around an open world, building the character you control, making decisions that affect the overall plot and many more elements are what make action RPG games so fun. We have come a long way since the release of classic RPG games such as Legend of Zelda, Diablo, Final Fantasy, etc.
Modern PCs and consoles such as the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch now offer a higher power level of graphics and gameplay environment that make action RPG games a much more immersive experience than what it was 20-30 years ago.

#6. Path of Exile

Path of Exile is a 7-year-old game that still holds up as one of the best action RPGs available. Path of Exile is also free-to-play and it is not much of a grind.
You can play online with other players and there is a "hard" mode as well, which causes permanent death and makes you restart from a certain point.
There are 6 classes you can choose from and you can choose which attribute to power up. You have to play through dungeons in order to get items in order to get a lot stronger.
The game is inspired by the Diablo series and follows the mechanics of the games. Path of Exile receives frequent updates which is not very common among RPG games.
#5. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 is based on a post-apocalyptic world devasted by nuclear war. It is the 5th game in the Fallout series and there is almost always something to do.
The objective of the game is to find your missing child. While doing so you can travel the game world, build structures and shelters, meet other factions, gather resources and complete a plethora of quests.
While it initially had a few issues, Fallout 4 has proven to be a really fun action RPG game and one of the better Fallout games.
#4. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

The latest Assassin's Creed entry is probably one of the best titles Ubisoft has ever made so far. In Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, you can choose to be a male or female warrior in the Peloponnesian War in Ancient Greece.
The game emphasizes a lot on role-playing elements that affect the story, which was not seen in previous Assassin's Creed games.
There are also many DLCs that expand on the story. The game features fluid combat mechanics and even naval combat. This game is perhaps Ubisoft's best action RPG game yet!
#3. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Set in the continent of Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls 5 is one of the best-known action RPG games of the decade. The Elder Scrolls has always been a strong contender in the RPG genre.
In Skyrim, your actions will have consequences so be careful with what you do. You can choose mastery over melee weapons, magic, archery, and many other skills.
There are so many side quests and missions to do in the game you will completely forget to follow the main plotline. Even when you do follow the main plot, there are so many missions you will be given parallelly.
Choose your preferred race of character, wander through the huge world, meet friends and foes, get married, garner your skills and get lost in the world of Skyrim.
#2. Divinity: Original Sin 2

Largely considered one of the best games of all time and one of the best action RPGs of all time, Divinity: Original Sin 2 truly lives up to the hype. The game has a top-down view much like Diablo or Path of Exile.
You can choose between many classes and the best part is, they do not place many class restrictions. You can play any class in any style you wish.
You can play this game solo or party online with three other friends. There is just so much content in the game it can be a huge timesink.
It also has a fair bit of complexity to the game but once you figure it out, you won't be able to stop playing.
#1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD Projekt Red delivers another masterpiece with The Witcher 3. Based on the Polish novels of the same name, you control Geralt of Riviera who is a monster hunter hunting throughout the world.
You have many weapons to discover and choose from and a plethora of activities to do.
If you feel tired of killing and exploring, you can immerse yourself in mini-games such as boxing, horse racing, card playing (this was later evolved into its own game called Gwent).
You are also placed in a position to make decisions in many scenarios which will affect your gameplay. There are 36 possible endings you can get which are all affected by your decision making.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is probably the best action RPG out there until CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 comes and takes it over (fingers crossed).
