Fernando Alonso today went past Michael Schumacher’s total points scored in a career record after he finished 4th in today’s Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. We take a walk down memory and take a look at 5 of his best victories in Formula One
5) German Grand Prix 2012
Alonso surprised the F1 community when he put his Ferrari on pole position in a rather wet qualifying session. Fewer people expected him to win the let alone keep the lead at the end of the first lap in the dry conditions the next day. However, Alonso pulled off a master-class keeping both his title rivals Vettel and Button at bay as he drove a brilliant defensive race
4) 2007 European Grand PrixIn a year that Alonso had to deal with his rather over-exuberant team-mate, an upstart by the name of Lewis Hamilton and a team that favoured the upstart – Alonso showed the world just why he was the two-time defending champion. At the Nurburgring, he pulled off an outstanding win in rainy conditions as he chased down the Ferrari of his current team mate Felipe Massa after the clouds turned the track into a lake.
3) 2012 Malaysian Grand PrixDespite qualifying 8th on the grid, Alonso hammered past his rivals to take the win after the race was held up by torrential rain. After the race restarted under the safety car, Alonso eased a rather crappy Ferrari up the grid as he took out his rivals one by one. He then endured a challenge from the Sauber of Sergio Perez who blitzed the lap times during the final quarter of the race.
2) 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix Alonso frst win of his career was one of his most dominating ones. He pulled of a gap of 21s over the pursuing pack lead by Kimi Raikkonen in 13 laps before pitting for fuel. He quickly regained the lead after the stop and went onto lap all but five of his fellow drivers. Among those he lapped was the championship leader and defending champion – a guy by the name of Michael Schumacher
F1 Hungarian GP 2003 by Markbel1)2005 San Marino Grand PrixFerrari’s latest prancing horse the F2005 had barely made any impact in the two races before Imola and the tifosi were out in full forse to give it the much need kick up the backside. Alonso who was driving quite comfortably after the first pit-stop suddenly had a mirror full of a scarlet horse driven by a possessed Schumacher who blasted his way from 13th to second, reeling of lap after fastest lap to bring the Ferrari into contention for the win. The Spaniard though had other ideas as he showcased his defensive skills and proved to the world that the ballistic Renault R25 had a driver who was more than worthy of driving it and winning the championship.
