After winning the championship in 2008, Lewis Hamilton was defending his drivers' title in 2009. He had the worst possible start to his title defense, after the first five races of the season Hamilton did not even score a single point. Hamilton started the race in the fourth place behind Webber, Vettel, and Alonso. Alonso and Vettel had to retire due to mechanical failure, Hamilton had the lead and never looked back after that. He won his first race as the reigning champion and also ended his dry run without points. It was also the first win for a car running on Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

The 2010 Turkish Grand Prix is still remembered as it was the race which sparked the rivalry between Vettel and Webber. Red Bull drivers Vettel and Webber were running first and second, in the battle to take the lead they both collided which forced Vettel to retire, and Webber lost some places and was not in a position to take the lead anymore. This incident left Hamilton and his McLaren teammate Jenson Button in a wheel-to-wheel battle for the win. It was looking like McLaren would repeat what Red Bull had done, but Hamilton came out on top just by a few seconds.

He went on to win the even after he was forced to pit with a right-rear puncture early on in the race when he collided. Though he lost only a few places due to the wet conditions, his team's clever long-fuel strategy got him back his place in the front. He again was in danger of losing out on the race win after he got another Tyre puncture on the last lap but he managed to get his McLaren-Mercedes car over the line on time to win the race.
