Vettel targeting race victory after qualifying second

Sebastian Vettel has set his sights on winning tomorrow’s Malaysian Grand Prix after splitting the two Mercedes to qualify second on the grid.

The German’s last gasp effort in a wet qualifying session was within a tenth of Lewis Hamilton’s pole time, setting up the mood high at Ferrari. And while much if it was down to treacherous conditions, Vettel feels the car felt equally good in dry conditions.

“I think yes, we can,’’ Vettel said when asked whether he has a shot at top step of the podium tomorrow. “But it depends on a lot of things that I cannot tell you now. As you saw today, there is rain in the air, if it comes at the right moment for you, it can be quite good but it can work against you too. Our race pace looks decent, but we have to be realistic.”

"Obviously when it starts to rain here – and there’s always a high chance – it can mix up things. I think it was an interesting qualifying session and the car felt good in both dry and wet conditions at the end.

The last time Ferrari qualified on front row was in 2013 when Felipe Massa put the F138 in second position behind, er, Sebastian Vettel.
