Watch: Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, others crash early in 2018 Daytona 500
Lap 60 was the end of Stage 1 of the Daytona 500, but it looked more like the end of the Great American Race.
Racing down the backstretch for stage points Sunday at Daytona International Speedway, Ryan Blaney tried to get around Ricky Stenhouse Jr. but the two made contact. Stenhouse moved up the track and was able to save his car but the movement caused a chain-reaction accident in the tight draft.
Here's a replay. What do you guys think about Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s aggressive move on Ryan Blaney?https://t.co/E09ziMKq3G— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) February 18, 2018
Jimmie Johnson, Erik Jones, William Byron, Daniel Suarez, Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr and Ty Dillon were all caught up in the accident in some way with Johnson and Suarez catching the worst of it.
"I think there was some great racing throughout," Johnson, who crashed out of all three of his races during Speedweeks, told Fox Sports. "But unfortunately, many thought that was the black and white checkered flag, not the green and white checkered flag. So, Lap 59 to be throwing blocks and stuff like that, that’s how you get a lot of wrecked race cars."
Added Suarez: "Things were getting a little crazy for the end of the stage. I thought I was going to be safer (in the front), but I guess they were just over-aggressive."
Kyle Busch's shot at the Daytona 500 likely also came to an end with tire issues. A second spin on Lap 50 resulted in a three-car crash.
More tire issues for Kyle Busch. It didn't go quite as smoothly this time. https://t.co/BzSorEMhK6— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) February 18, 2018
Busch is still in the race but was four laps down following the wreck.
