In the form of his life and having narrowly missed out on a transfer to Real Madrid a couple of seasons back, Manchester United deemed it appropriate to offer De Gea the largest wage among all players in the league, amounting to a mammoth £375,000 a week. At that time, it wasn't seen as a bad decision at all as de Gea was arguably the best shot-stopper in all of Europe.
Unfortunately, he has been struggling of late and is at an all-time low in terms of confidence. The lack of confidence has led to him making quite a few mistakes leading to goals. There is popular belief around Old Trafford that De Gea's time as the club's number one might be up, and it is time to pass the baton to youngster Dean Henderson.
