118th IFA Shield: United SC beat Geylang International 2-1, reach semifinals

Defending IFA Shield champions United SC won 2-1 against Geylang International FC of Singapore in their crucial Group I match at the Saltlake Stadium on Saturday evening.

United SC after their win over South Korean side Busan Sun Moon FC, scored another win against a foreign side with a 2-1 win over Geylang International FC. With their second group stage win United SC finish second in Group I with six points from three matches and qualified for a third-time in a row for the IFA Shield semifinals.

All the three goals were scored in the first half with United SC going ahead through a Baldeep Singh goal in the 21st minute before Liberian Eric Brown doubled the lead in the 34th minute, but Geylang International stayed in the game with Fukuda reducing the deficit in the 38th minute.

United SC’s Eric Brown was awarded the man of the match award for his performance.

After making it into the semifinals, United SC would now face local Kolkata rivals Mohammedan Sporting in the semifinals on Tuesday, February 11.
