Manchester United started the 2018-19 season poorly, which subsequently led to the sacking of the former manager, Jose Mourinho. The Red Devils appointed their former player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the caretaker manager for the rest of the season, and they are yet to lose a game under the Norwegian.

The Red Devils are now sixth on the Premier League table, just six points adrift of the Champions League qualification places. They would now be looking forward to continuing their unbeaten run in the league, putting pressure on their rivals.

However, there are still some improvements needed in the Red Devils' squad, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could use the January transfer window as an opportunity to further enhance his team.

Right on this note, here is the list of three players Manchester United could sign in January, in order to finish in the top-four.

#3 Florian Thauvin

With Alexis Sanchez struggling with his form at the moment, Manchester United are short on the wings and need a new winger to take their team forward. Marseille's Florian Thauvin is among the most in-form wide-men in the world currently, and would be a great addition for the Red Devils.

Florian Thauvin is a superb dribbler and is composed in front of goal. He possesses great pace and loves to cut inside into good shooting positions. He scored 22 league goals from the wing last season, and was also a part of France's FIFA World Cup 2018 winning squad.

The 25-year-old is in a great form this season as well, and has registered 11 goals and 4 assists in 17 Ligue 1 games.

The French international struggled to impress during his previous spell in the Premier League with Newcastle United. However, he has improved a lot since joining Marseille in 2016, and now looks ready to showcase his talents in the English top division.

Marcus Rashford is doing a decent job for United as a striker at the moment, however, the Red Devils cannot fully depend on him to lead the line, and they need a new striker to take the goal-scoring burden away from the youngster.

Mauro Icardi is a highly prolific scorer with immense talent and incredible finishing skills, making him one of the finest strikers in Europe. The Argentine international scored 29 league goals last season, and won the Serie A Golden Shoe.

The 25-year-old is in terrific form this season as well, and has registered 9 goals and 2 assists in 16 league games. He has also scored 4 goals in 6 Champions League games prior to Inter's exit from the tournament during the group stages.

The Argentine international is reportedly rejecting a contract extension with the Italian club, and Manchester United could use it as an opportunity to lure him to Old Trafford.

#1 Kalidou Koulibaly

Manchester United have conceded 32 goals in the Premier League this season, and have the joint worst defensive record among the 'top-6' teams. They tried to sign a centre-back in the summer transfer window, but unfortunately, they failed to finalise a deal with any of their top targets, and ended up falling short in the position

The Red Devils are again in the market for a centre-back, and Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly is identified as the top target by the club.

The Senegalese international is presently among the best defenders in the world, and could be a dream signing for Manchester United.

Koulibaly is a quick, tall, and strong defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet, and possesses an excellent passing range as well. He has completed 1183 passes this season, with an impressive accuracy of 88.6 percent. With 25 interceptions and 34 tackles completed in the league alone, he is among Napoli's top performers.

However, the 27-year-old is among the most sought after players at the moment, and other big clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid are also showing interest in him. Manchester United need to pay a big fee in order to secure the services of the Senegalese international.
